  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Timmy went for his VHD last monday and we discussed the limp side effect with the vet, not surprisingly, the vet didnt know anything about such a side effect, he asked us to let him know if Timmy did develop the limp, which he did approx 12 hours after the jab and was fully recivered within 36 hours. Anyway We informed our vet this morning when we dropped Petey off to be neutered that Timmy did indeed limp after the jab, both vets were there and we expalined the sympoms to both vets, neither of which had heard of it before, we also told them about this forum and that many people country wide have also experienced it with their rabbits, they said they were very interested to hear about it and would be contacting the manufacterers of the vaccine to notify them.

So I wonder now if vets will be notified about this side effect??

I mentioned this to my vet and he had never heard or it in any of the rabbits he had done but had a case refferred to him from another practice. He thinks it may be that the vaccine is accidentally nicked into a corner of the muscle or placed just a bit too close to the shoulder muscle so that the oil based vaccine affects the muscle causing a limp.

I liken it to having the Hep B vaccine - the second and third one caused me to get bruising in the arm muscle and I couldn't lift my arm above shoulder height for a day or so without a nasty stabbing pain. Though other vaccines I have had in the same place done by the same nurse haven't caused this as they are more water based.
