Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Advice wanted, bun is getting bald patches

Wise Old Thumper
Just wondered if anybody had any advice. One of my buns 'Misty' is 5 yrs old and around his rear end is fur is coming out so bad that he as actually got bald patches, I have checked for mites and can't see anything but bathed him in a mite shampoo that I get from the vets just to be on the safe side. I am taking him on Thursday to the Vets as my vet specialises in skin complaints but I was hoping somebody may know something.

Are you sure it's not just moulting? When Alfie moults his fur comes out in tufts and in some places he gets bald patches, usually there is a tiny hint of fur underneath them. Sort of like stubble.

The bald patches gradualyl move as the hair on them grows and the fur just below in turn falls out.

I'm not convinced its moulting as he does moult bad but has never moulted this bad before and as you said Tam, there is no stubble underneath. It looks like he's mangey (bless him)

Several of mine are moulting, particularly around their rear ends, and when the tufts come out there can be a bare patch until the new fur grows in -especially if you pull out the tufts (and they are soo tempting )

The fur should only take a few days to appear if it is only moulting.
