  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

british giant castration dont know what to do!!!!!

right hagrid (british giant) is 19 weeks old, and his testicles have not dropped, so i called the vet and asked they said he is old enought to be castrated but because he is a british giant they need double the anesthetic so it will be more and because it will take longer it will also cost more £120  its normally £51 for a stanard buck rabbit!

also they said if they find it to be a girl would i like her spayed!?

i am so confused now! :? firstly do they normally charge more for british giants? and could he have girly insided although he has a penis?

and lastly if he sis turm out to be a girl would she be old enough to be spayed bearing in mind they are british giants!

I would wait until they drop. Giants take longer to mature, and hormones help in that development. Strawberry's hadn't dropped before I had him which made people think he had already been neutered. I reckon he was about 7 months old. I had him done at the pet vaccination clinic for £25, the same price as all the others. They were a bit flabergasted about his size though, remarking that he was over 4kg. But they said nothing about the price. (I think he is over 5kg now, he is far more solid than when I had him - he was still maturing.)

It is a far more serious op when they haven't dropped. I def wouldn't do it to him. How closely have you checked to make sure he is male? It should be possible to tell by his age even without the obvious dangly bits. But even for a doe I would wait until at least 6 months, especially in a giant.

pet vacination clinic for £25  i bet there is not one of those around here!

whose to know whether they will drop or not!

the vet has checked him and said he is a boy! but also said if he has not dropped by the time he is 6 months old they would need to operate as he would be at risk from cancer!

i am also confused because some say its ok to castrate him now (the vet and other members of the forum that i have had chats with, and others say no it to early) i on the other hand dont know what to do for the best!

My vet said he would operate on a giant at four months even if they haven't dropped but he is a specialist and probably has a lot of experience fishing around for "lost balls" ;) .

I seem to remember Zeus' were dropped when we bought him at 12 weeks though but I may be imagining it.

It should not cost more!! That is ridiculous and you should have a proper go at them my vet is expensive compared to my local surgery and charges £55-60 for a neuter - it was the same price for Zeus at 7kg as it was for Cosmos at 3Kg.

I have heard the hormone argument before but not sure if any references were posted. How vital are the hormones in developing rabbits, what are the problems they get if they are done too early?

If he has a penis he isn't a girl! I should think the vet was a tad confused and didn't remember examining him before. He/she probably gets a lot of boys that turn out to be girls from bad sexing so said that as a standard response not realising they had already declared him male.

but what can i say! i very much doubt that they are gonna change there minds are they!

Lots of vets charge more the bigger the animal because they have to use more anasthetic.with most rabbits its three mths when there testicals drop. The only thing that comes to mind is there will be a problem with retained testicals ,if this is the case they must be removed as they will cause problems later.Iwould leave him till hes 5 mths if nothing has happened by then he will need to have them removed as they are not going to drop.

Hi,

If it were me I would talk to someone who specialises in giants and find out what they think.

There is a woman called Gwen who breeds and runs a giant rescue if you are interested I could look her up for you, she had an artical in the last RWA mag. I'm sure she would give you sound advice.

If you can get hold of her ;) !

Ah it was her !

What about giving the RWA help line a call, they know her well I'm sure they could make enquiries on your behalf.

Or contacting the BRC and they could put you in touch with a breeder of
British Giants to get some advice from them.

I think you have some time yet till the threat of cancer kicks in, if they will drop on their own it is a lot smaller operation than if they are impacted which Mr Billies were. I would check every avenue before I go for the op to be sure, let's face it you have been through a lot already.

Best Wishes

Eve, have u actualy seen his penis or just the outer tube?,There are rabbits all be it rare that are both male and female, they are called crypt orcids. My friend breeds continental giants and he said they should be down before 4 mths, these are bigger than british giants so there should be no difference. He has had a rabbit that only one of the testicals came down and he had to be done because of the risk of cancer. val ps: The lady that breeds continental giants that had the artical in the mag is called sue dully, the other lady in the artical was from the mag.

he is definity a boy just with no descended testicles!

hi

Hi

charging that much, oh my goodness, ive not heard of that before but some vets are different.

I would wait til they drop, if he is ok and not showing desperate unsuitable habits that make you want to do it, then wait.

They can take a while, its like large dogs often take a while longer to mature.

I would get quotes from other vets if I was you

I think if he has a penis, hes a boy, it can happen that they can be both but I think its pretty rare. I think he is still very young for his breed and agree with everyone else on this one..

Get another quote.
