Look no further than the rabbit’s tail, says Dr Max Wheeler of the Linguistics and English Language Dept at the University of Sussex. ‘It’s thought to come from the Scottish word bun, meaning “hare’s tail”. And by the 16th century “bun” had become a term for squirrel or rabbit.’
