  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My two bun's are living in a large secure run that they have access to all the time during these summer months, I was wondering if any of you have ideas about how to keep flies away from the run. This might be a really daft question but I was just wondering about things like citronella scented stuff etc.

Is there anything other than repelant that you all use?? Also have ants ever been a problem to Rabbits? I have seen the odd one in the run, I think I'm just paranoid that they be bitten by beasty's.

Another message from a neurotic bunny mom,

I use sticky fly papers in my runs just make sure there high up out of bunny's reach but they work really well!

Ihave planted some lemon balm in a pot to try and keep the flies off - I have seen ants too and was worried but the buns dont seem to be! I also hand bunches of lavender in the runs :)

OOps I mean HANG bunches of lavender - sounded like I sit there all day and hand them to the buns as they pass by!

I only put the leaves - does that attract the bees too or just the flowers - sorry I should have been more specific!

I got some pure citronella oil from Boots and put a few drops in a spray bottle with bit of water and sprayed round the bunny runs and that seemed to do the trick.
