  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

another myxi outbreak

Oh no, I am wondering if there has been an outbreak by me, I still haven't seen any wild bunnies, how could I find out?

maybe u could ask your vets if they have heard anything?

Unfortunately the vaccine isn't 100% effective - it depends on the rabbit being in good health when it is vaccinated. If it's not in top health then it can't build up the resistance.
This is why we wait 2 weeks after a new rabbit comes in before inoculating (gives it time to settle in after the stress of moving).

Your local vet would be the best person to know if there is a local outbreak.

As it is spread by biting insects you could try a flea repellent (such as Xenox from vet) Although this has not been proven yet to be successful it is just another precaution.

If an inoculated bunny does get myxi then it has a much better chance of survival. A rabbit that hasn't had the vaccine is sure to die.

We lost 6 to it last year (despite being vaccinated).
Very, very distressing and I truly hope that no one's precious bunnies get it.
