  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Worried..

Hi, earlier on i got one of my rabbits out, as im trying to get him used to me and he wriggled about.. i noticed a small amount of blood on the towel which i was using to calm him, and then realised that he has pulled or snapped one of his claws off, im worried and i was wondering if there is anything that i can do to make sure that he is ok.

hayley x :(

One of mine broke a claw in a mad dash about once. I had to go to the vet anyway, so I got him to take a look. If you keep it clean with boiled salt water it will help. How low has it snapped off, I take it that it's stopped bleeding now? If it won't stop the vet should have some powder to help it form a scab.
My vet also said if it was low there could be a risk of an infection spreading to the bone, which would be harder to clear with antibiotics. So basically, clean it and check it every day. It will probably heal on its own, but if it doesn't look healthy you might need antibiotics from your vet. Hope this helps, I expect other people on here have their own experience of this!

Dont worry, mine do it quite a lot, especially Ralf. I just bathe his foot in some salted water and all is fine.
