Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

skin going black

I'm worried about Poppy, one of my new buns ........ a few days ago she had a dispute with Murray and he plucked a lot of her fur.

At the time I had a look at it and it looked ok ..... a bit bald but the skin wasn't broken ....... and again the next day and it looked the same, so I thought that as she's going to the vet in a few days that it would be ok.

I've been concentrating on her sticky bottom problem and only checked this evening and the skin where he plucked her has turned black.

Has anybody else had this happen to their buns?? .....How serious is it???

I'm a bit worried that she might have had some baldness before we got her (barely a week ago) as the fur plucked doesn't seem to cover all the bald area ......is there a condition that could cause this???

Hiya,

Perhaps what you are seeing is the fur growing through. Are the tips of her fur black/grey, a agouti (brown) rabbit can also have black tips on the fur. If so this should start coming through as fuzz. Fur can grow at different rates so the area may cover gradually.

I sort of thought that it might be her fur growing back ......... but if it is then it is still below the skin's surface as there is no fuzz or anything coming through the skin yet.

Her skin is very light, in other places you can clearly see blood vessels so it is probably just the fur about to grow through the surface.

Thanks for putting my mind at rest, Tamsin.
