  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Head shaking

Yes,it could be, have you peeked in his ears to see if they are dirty looking? Even if you can't spot anything you'll need a vet to check right down inside with their special ear scope.

Do I have to take them in to the vest for that? Drat! I was hoping I could just buy some drops or something. Well, I'll see if the shaking gets worse. They seem happy and frisky otherwise. I am so broke right now.... :?

Its really quite important to treat possible ear infections quickly. If it turns out to be an inner ear infection then you can quickly end up with a bun with a head tilt, circling and not being able to balence sometimes a bun is left with a perminant tilt if that happens. If its ear mites not an infection you might be able to get over the counter treatment, I know you can for cats/dogs BUT you'd need to be very careful it was safe for rabbits.

Treatment is usually relatively cheap compared to other things.

Is the bun scratching at the ears too?

What context does the shaking happen in? Sometimes buns will shake their head whilst binkying (doing mad leaps about the place).

Well, I looked inside and they look clean, but they do scratch at their ears when they groom themselves. It just seems different then the Binky shaking because they often give a little "shake shake" when they eat something good or whatever. But this is more like a "shake shake shake shake shake shake."
