Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit Specialists

I posted this before but I got no answer. :( So I thought Id try again :)

Dose anyone know of a “Rabbit Specialist”. I tried asking my vet last time I called them but they said I didn’t need one as there vet was fully qualified.

I thought that with Toby being as old as he is he might need a vet that just deals with rabbits only.

Hi Toby

All vets deal with all animals, but some are 'exotic' specialists, which means they are more interested in those species such as rabbits, and have greater expertise. Perhaps one of the best ways of finding a really good rabbit vet would be to ask for personal recommendation.

Whereabouts are you? I know a couple who I would definitely trust with my rabbits' lives, and many more who I would not!

Hi MightyMax - I live in Surbiton Surrey, but don't mind a little travel (if it's still in surrey). I just think that’s vets that deal with all animals are good but have more experience with Dogs and cats.

hi Toby

A vet I can highly recommend is currently in Hayes......if you think that is anywhere near to you, then I shall pm you his details. Others may know of good vets in the Surbiton area? I am very bad on geography :( so maybe not much help......

I find that a local, OK type of vet will do for a lot of things, but an expert is needed in some situations......someone who has that eye for subtle changes in rabbit physiology..... 8)

Maybe we should make our own rabbit vet specialist list similar to the RWA one (could make it a sticky or put it in the useful info section). I don't know if Tamsin thinks we could get in trouble - I am sure she could add a disclaimer that this board and RR is not responsabile/liable for any actions taken by the vets that are recommended.

Vets we know are either "exotic specialists", or see loads of rabbits in their practice and are willing/keen to research into problems. Then new people can use it to refer to when looking for good rabbit vets in their area.

My recommendation would be:

Mr Chitty
Strathmore Veterinary Clinic London Rd Andover Hampshire SP10 2PH 01264 352323

(Also specialises in birds (inc birds of prey) and reptiles)

I think you have come up with a great idea for a Sticky, and as long as there is a disclaimer for RU I cannot see any problem with this :D
I am always getting asked about this myself, so it would be much better to hand a database of Rabbit Specialists or rabbit friendly Vets.
I know the RWA has a list but I think you have to be a Member to access it.

I will email your thread across to Tamsin, as it is easy to miss things on RU now that there are so many Members and different thread.

Best wishes
Adele

Thank you for all your replies. I think it’s a great idea to get a topic put up about Rabbit Specialists!!

Caz – How far do you travel to get to your vets – it is a good distance for me where your vet is.

Suzi Wong – Does that page supply Rabbit specialists?. I have a vet but he doesn’t just deal with rabbits. Its seems to me that there isn’t a whole lot around here as far as animals are concerned. :(

It takes me 45min  - which isn't always great for emergencies but they will come in at any time and have stayed till 8pm for me, when I rang to say (just before they shut at 7pm) that Zeus was in stasis and I was heading over. My local vets used to be open only at random times and I could never get appointments after work but Strathmore stay open late enough for me to get home from work (45min) and get to them - including enough time to catch the rabbit in question ;) !

I have looked up vets on that site Maaike posted (can't find it now) - that was good for checking whether any local vets specialise or not but I must admit often a personal recommendation goes a long way. That one you posted Suzi doesn't have my vets on it - wierd :? !

I'm not sure where Surbiton is exactly, but think its not for from Wimbledon type area so my specialist vet could be ok for you. I take my bunny with never ending teeth problems to Chris Hall, he's based in East Sheen. Look him up on google.

He's comes very highly recommended from my normal vet who I've been taking the buns to for 5 years but they could no longer help Fern with her teeth. Chris has been really good, unfortunately the prognosis for Fern isn't good, but at least I'll always know I tried my best for her. He's an hours drive from me and is rather expensive but its definnitely worth it for his knowledge and experience.

I'll second that, Bev Bunny - everyone I know who has been to Chris Hall says how thorough he is....he certainly knows his stuff!

ps - shall be in touch shortly about home visit course.....just fixing a date :)
