  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

What does a....

Haven't a clue as the 3 times Totti has had this, I've let the Vet do the feeling as I don't know what I'm feeling for. I've gone by the lack of poos symptom.

Might be easier if you have a listen & go on other symptoms, Gem. I can never tell by feeling Evo's tummy, although the vet can even tell roughly which bit of the tummy is causing the problem.

I usually go on - change of behaviour (sitting weirdly, quieter than normal etc), lack of interest in food & water and tummy noise - too much or none.

Sitting hunched up in the corner, refusing food and grinding his teeth were what alerted me with Zeus - that and his stomach was making some really loud gurgling noises. I wouldn't know what to feel for - sorry!

A bunnies tummy will be distended...if there is a blockage(food? fur?) causing the gut statis, you can often feel a solid area, then an area below that gushes like a hot water bottle when pressed.
The solid area can be gently stimulated by massage if the bunny can tolerate it, and this sometimes is enough to get things moving.
Also, rabbits can get the runs with a blockage as waste matter seeps through, but the solid stuff remains inside
Any change in behaviour is a good thing to look out for , but unless you check your rabbits tummy daily, it can be missed as bunnies hide illness so well :?
It is a good idea to get used to feeling your rabbits tum  and what is where before any problems develop because then you are more likely to notice a change
Take a rabbit to the Vets promptly if you have any concerns, it is better to be safe than sorry, especialy if any gut problems are developing.
I sit the rabbit in front of me, and have a gentle prod of their belly, they are all used to this now, and sit quite still so I can do the checks :D

Yep think Adele and the other good folks are crack on with this one.

When I first encountered GI Statis I couldn't believe how solid Buffy's tummy felt and how enlarged it was and I think the only way you get to know this is by knowing how your bunster feels when it is normal - so loads of cuddles and handling your bunster should help you to spot the symptoms - and who needs any excuse for a cuddle eh
