Teary eye

Momiji has got a a weepy eye on one side. It doesn't seem to be painful or bothering him in any way. I'm taking him to the vets tomorrow just in case anyway, but may I ask your opinion on what it could be? It just looks like he's been crying out of one eye or something. Nothing else but bunny tears. :( :( :(

Please help me.

Jennie

Most teary eyes are linked to tooth root problems - Zeus has had one eye ongoing for a year - treating with antibiotics and eye drops helped but never cured it.

He has just had an x-ray and it confirmed he has to have extractions to cure the problem completely :(!

My bun has this problem as well. His had it for almost a year now; it went from one eye to both eyes. His been to the vets and gave him a good check over every time and they say his fine. It does bother me but I am sure if it was serious something would have been said now.

How old is your bun? let us know what the vets say.

Emma.

Hi there, I really wouldn't worry. Is your bun still eating ok ? If so then it might not be teeth. Ben gets blocked tear ducts every now and then - which according to my vet is quite common, and are nothing to do with his teeth. Generally if I catch it on day one, then I can just give his eye a good wash with water and all is fine. If it is still there after a couple of days then my vet gives me eye drops, called Tiacil, which go into both eyes (so infection can't spread) for about a week. He has only not been fine after this once, and then he had to go and get his tear ducts flushed (easy op, which they can do while bunny is conscious if he isn't a wriggler, but they have to knock them out if they are). Hope all goes well tomorrow :)

Momiji is about 2 and a half months old now. And I certainly will update when I come back from the vets.

As a fisrt time animal owner (my parents wouldn't let me keep any pets and my OH left those sorts of issues with his mother reguarding the cats his family own)

Yep. He seems to be eating, having "mad half hours" (running around like a mad bun!) and demanding nose rubs as usual!

I do hope it's just his tear ducts. I couldn't bare it emotionaly if it was something serious. It must sound silly but I even feal a bit teary myself just thinking about it.

Eating, nose rubs AND running around like a mad bun !! That doesn't sound like a sick bunny to me :D
I'm sure he's going to be fine.

I feel a little at ease hearing that. Thanks! I'm still having him checked out, though. I'm such an over protective bunny mummy... I feel a bit silly for worrying over nothing quite often!

Like when I thought Momiji was.. You know... When he was sleeping sprawled out on the living room floor. I had to poke the poor bun to make sure! Sorry Momiji!

Hi there :)

Most teary eyes are either an allergy (to dust or something in the atmosphere) or else as a result of blocked tear ducts. Usually in the first instance, a vet will prescribe some drops. If the problem continues, it may be advisable to have the tear ducts flushed.

It is impossible to know whether the teeth are causing a problem with tear ducts unless you inject dye into the tear ducts and X-ray the skull under anaesthetic (not at all painful!). A lot of tear duct problems are unfortunately caused by tooth roots, and are impossible to cure completely. They are very manageable, though :) :) Nothing at all you should worry yourself about :)

I have noticed one thing, though. He licks things. Usualy my pillow that I like to lay my head on when relaxing on the floor in the living room. I read a lot so I usualy lay and read at the same time. He licks it either when I am on it or when I've just gotten up. Do you think this has something to do with it?

Awwwww, I think he loves you!!!
(Either that or you use really tasty washing powder  )

I was worried at my bun doing that to start with. He used to rub his chin on EVERYTHING (which just means that he owns it now !) and lick my leg or the floor by me when I was stroking him. Apparently that is just him returning the favour and buns only groom buns they like :)

Correct me if I am wrong bunny veterans :)

Aww! I didn't know that! Lots and lots of bunny cuddles for that (not that I don't give enough already, it seems)! Even if it is just the washing powder, it's such a cute thing to see!

If the problem continues, it may be advisable to have the tear ducts flushed.

That reminds me what the vet said to me - that he couldn't ever flush Toby’s tear ducts as his to old.

I really think Aerry, that if your bun is eating, pooping and looking bright and happy he/she should be ok. Though I would still go to the vets just to make sure - but i wouldn’t worry :)

Oh Toby, what a strange thing for your vet to say

What does he think will happen to the tear ducts if he flushes them, just because Toby is old :?: You only need a drop of local anaesthetic in the eye, not a complete GA......the whole thing is over in a minute or two at most.........

You'd have thought the whole tear duct flush thing would be easier in an older bun. More likely to sit still and not wriggle around, so wouldn't need a general anaesthetic. They gave my bun a GA, but he was about 8 months old and into everything at the time.

Erm... I woke up this morning and gave Momiji a big cuddle and I've noticed... The teary eye has gone! There are no signs of it ever being there. Should I take Momiji to the vets anyway?

Zeus was acting like a normal rabbit throughout the whole teary eye thing - he never went off food or acted ill except when it got bad and caused him to get mites etc at the end of last year, I originally dismissed the tooth root suggestion until it started to get worse. Eventually I had to admit that it wasn't going away and took him to see the specialist.

In your case if it has stopped it is possible that the tear duct was just blocked.

I would still take him in for a check up as it won't hurt and you can then discuss all the options with the vet for if it occurs again. He can also do a quick MOT for you and check the back teeth out - give him the once over etc. Are your injections up to date? You could always get him to do the first one as well if they aren't!

Right, just come back from the vets. He said that since it's gone now, there's no need to worry. If I see it again then give his eye a wash with water. If it persists, then I should visit the vet again and he'll give me drops.

He said it was probably an alergy to something, so if it comes back, I'll see what could possibly cause it and take those offending items away one at a time.

Thanks again for the help! It's really appreciated.

Love Jennie and Momiji.
