Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Clipping rabbits claws?

Hot~Bunny

Young Bun
Hi anyone with rabbits here that can give me advice on how far or much I should cut, I did cut them about 2-3 months ago but just tiny bit on the top as I was not sure.
They are dark brown in colour so I cant really see anything where the vain is.

Hiya Hot Bunny, if you get a small torch and shine it behind the claw you should see where the vein starts and ends. :D
Only trim a tiny bit off at a time, as small a piece as you can, but do this regularly, every 2- 3 weeks rather than leaving it for ages in between.
If you do happen to cut a bit too much off the nail, elevate the paw that is bleeding to reduce blood supply and press against the nail with a piece of tissue till the bleeding stops.
Adding a bit of vaseline to the end of the nail can also help blood clot ...I sometimes nick a claw of the Sanctuary rabbits, but it has not been disasterous just as long as you take great care when trimming the nail and then swift action should it bleed.
Any wound/ nail that continues to bleed for more than half an hour or is profusely must be seen by a Vet urgently.

I would also highly recommend getting a Vet to show you how to clip claws to begin with, and only attempt to clip claws yourself if you feel confident to do so. There are risks involved as I have mentionned above.

Aww thank you, I was so scared at first that I was not suppose to, not sure where I got that idea from lol....

Thanks I will save your post and have it in keep

I have always found it easier to take Toby to the vets to get his nails clipped. The vet always tells me how to do it when I go there but I am worried Id make him bleed – am a wimp I know. :)

Once the vet has shown you how to do it and you have done it a few times it is easy :) With dark claws I always err on the side of caution as Adele said!! I once clipped a piggies quick and boy did he squeal!!! I felt so awful :(

I clip all my rabbits /piggies nails my myself in fact i did everyones about 3 nights ago
the easiest for me to do is lilac cause her nails are white/pink,claude and miffy have grey nails and shadow black ones,if im in a well lit room though i can see the quick on shadows nails even though there black

The best way ive found is to just cut were the nail protrudes from the hair line then u can be sure u dont cut to much, dont forget the dewclaw. val

I do all of mine, the vet nurse showed me how on Rosie and I bought some specialist claw clippers from them. I find it's a 2 man (or woman!) job, someone to hold the bun and someone to do the clipping. That way there's less risk of the little (ahem) tinker wriggling and you cutting the wrong bit.

Percy's a bit of a problem as his claws are black, I can see the quick in the others' claws though. I judge where I should cut his nails on the length of the other rabbits'.
