Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Deaf rabbit

New Kit
Our ten month old rabbit must be deaf, not bothered when vacuming and any other noises he does not react. Is this normal or are his ears blocked
with wax? Any info would be appreciated. :?: :?:

Maaike is the one to speak to her little rabbit Xena is deaf - it is quite a funny story how she finally realised!! I am sure she will be along soon!

Caz

P.S. Don't think rabbits get wax build-up so it is likely to be a genetic problem

Hehe, yep, that's me!

A box of toys fell over behind Xena, she paid nooooo attention. I vacuum around her, noooooo attention. "Xena, NO, STOP IT, DON'T DO THAT" she goes "ladidadida" and just keeps on doing whatever she was doing...

I don't think any amount of wax blockage would ever cause total deafness, and according to the vet, there's no test for it, so if you think your bunny's deaf, it probably is!

My vet clapped loud behind my buns head and watched to see if he blinked at all. Mine had bad hearing but wasnt deaf, and i think he sometimes had selective hearing too.

I think ALL rabbit have selective hearing! ;)

When the box of toys fell over, Xena just sat there "munch, munch munch" in her hay...Binky went beserk, Xena just SAT there EATING!!

Any time anything happens that's loud, Binky runs, Xena just munches...

Hence, Xena's also known in my family as "munch, munch, munch"

Hi,

My little lop doe (PTS last week) was deaf.
She was the runt of the litter and had numerous problems but her deafness didnt seem to bother her. I found she was quite bold and often lead the way and the buck followed her.

I had to be careful to make sure I didnt touch her when she couldnt see me and give her a fright.

I used hand signals and she soon learnt where I wanted her to go and to come to me.

She was a fabulous little bun and I miss her so much.
