Does your bunny take a friend to the vets?

BevBunny

Mama Doe
I always take both bunnies to the vets together - even if only one of them is having treatment. This has always stood for all treatment - even when Fern was put on a drip when she had stasis problems the vets (a late night emergency one, and then my normal one the next day) thought it would help for Charlie to go too.

Fern is going to the vets tomorrow for some dental work under anaesthetic - mostly burring off spurs. Its a new vets (the specialist one I was recommended), I called today to check that it was OK to take Charlie too and they said no. The receptionist said that they don't recommend it as often the 'healthy' rabbit will attack the other one when he/she comes back from surgery as they smell different! Even after a v lengthy conversation along the line of 'erm, Charlie couldn't attack his way out of a wet paper bag let alone attack Fern!' his final answer was 'well, its your choice but thats what we recommend'.

What do you all think?

The vets is about a 90 min drive from me, Fern hates it in the car its as much for the car journey as anything. But I'm dropping her off on the way to work and picking her up ont he way back - can't really take Charlie to work with me!!! (However, much I'd love to :) ).

Help! I'm already worried about her as she's gone all moody and lethargic today so her teeth are obviously stressing her! :(

mmmmmmm

I have always been told if you take one bun, take another along. When they come back they will have a different smell.

Personally, I would take the two buns along for the ride and take the buddy with you till you go back to pick up. (I have done this)

I would think its a good idea as it will calm bun down to have a buddy.

When I got Bugzee (female) and Sparkee (male) fixed on the same day I came to pick them up and they had them together in the same cage :D And they were very content and cuddling up to eachother :D . When I got Shadow fixed and was on his own in the vets, when I picked him up, he leaped onto me as soon as the door was opened :!: :!: :) He did have have a buddy for the drive there and back home.

Its your choice on what you do, but I can not see any harm in taking a buddy, if anything it will be better for bun rather than worse for bun.

I don't know...if they don't recommend it, then I wouldn't. Even the most placcid of animals can "attack" when they're frightened. Also, when Fern comes round, she'll be really confused and might even go for Charlie because it's the nearest possible culprit...

i only have one bun but he is great friends with my dog toby . when cheeky has to go to the vets , toby goes with him . they are so close and I think its the most beautiful thing in the world , they lie together , play together , they are well and truly bonded :p

haggis always takes his teddy bear  he`s a softy!

but maybe he`ll take pickles now they are bonded 8)

On the two occations Kim had her dental work Aggie went along on and Kim tagged along when Aggie had her show ring cut off.

My vet was perfectly happy and said that it was better for them to be together as they were bonded and it might be more stressful for them to be apart.

If you want to take them and they are a bonded pair then I would go with your instincts - after all at the end of the day you are the customer and employing the vet to do a job.

Hope eveything goes well.

lol Pam

I agree go with your gut instinct and take both if you feel that htey would both benefit.
Not only that but at least they both come home smelling of the vets instead of one smelling different and the other being funny about it.

But at teh end of the day they are your rabbits, so do what your heart tells you.

My own feeling would be like others have suggested and tell you do what you feel is right, personally I would take them both.

I have ALWAYS and will always take the partner along - don't care what the vet says (not that any of mine have ever complained...). The bunnies get stressed enough as it is with vet visits without the added stress of not having their partner around.

Thank you all so much for replying, I've been stressing about this all evening and thought I'd look on here before I went to bed.

I'm going to take both of them, its what I feel is right, I know how much they fret when they are apart and I can't bear to think of Fern being in a strange place on her own. Its not like Charlie will lick her or anything, he will sit there and let her do it to him instead  but he'll be there for. Fern is the little stressed one, Charlie is the laid back Charlie-boy, he'll be calm for both of them. (whilst I'm at working going mad with worry!)

I'm sure she'll be fine but I'm sure us bunny mums are all the same!

Vera - have decided I'm not all that happy with my new vet, am gonna take a trip over to Thornton Heath to see yours.

How did the dental work go? Did Charlie go along too?

I have only just caught up on this post but I'd say that if they are bonded and happy together take both as they will be less scared with somebody familiar there, and as other ppl said, they will both smell the same! My friend took both her degus along when one had an op - different animal but same principle!!

SNAP, I will be there too. Magic is having his VHD jab, but more importantly - and more worryingly - one of my hamsters is going to be spayed as she has pyometra. It is of course a high risk operation in such a small animal, but we don't really have an option other than let her deteriorate and pts ... So we will give her a chance. I hope she is going to be fine, I really don't want to lose another baby so soon.

Vera - I hope your hammy got on OK?

Fern is home and I have had some of my faith restored in the vet - he really does know his stuff, and went through it all thoroughly with me, he was quite dismissive last time. Perhaps I ask too many questions, so we shall see how things go, I'm still going to check out Vera's vet though.

Apparently 3 of Fern's molars had really nasty spurs on so they've now gone, one of her premolars was rotten so that has been removed completely and her front teeth have been clipped, and all the rest tidied up. She is a v v unhappy bunny, she's just hunched in the corner of her cage, she won't even acknowledge anyone. I'm syringe feeding her Recovery stuff (what a pain that is to get out of the syringe!) and she has pain killers, antiobiotics, stuff to make her gut work again and her mummy, daddy and Charlie bunny looking after her.

I took Charlie with her, the receptionist gave me a very disapproving look but the vet said it was fine.

Fingers crossed Fern picks up and starts being Fern again soon. :(

The 1ml suringes are easier to use than the big ones. You can try cutting the end off too, or sticking something in to force it abit wider.

Did she get painkillers? Their mouths can be abit sore afterwards.

You can also try offering the mix on a saucer or drizzed over her fav herbs. Some buns like pellets that have been sofened with water.

Yes, we used to do this for Snoopy when his teeth got bad. I find warm water softens them much quicker, then I let it cool off before feeding.

BTW. Our three always go to the vet together, even if just one needs treatment. The vet usually seems mildly amused at my eccentricity, especially as we try to fish out the correct bunny from a carrier full of fur. :D

Hope she feels better soon.

Thanks so much for the advice, I've tried soaking pellets and she's sniffed at them a bit so fingers crossed. I've also left her with some fresh peas in recovery goo - fresh peas are her favourite. I managed to post a couple into her mouth earlier - I think she's having problems picking things up. My problem now is that I've got Fern in the cage with her little selection of food, and Charlie outside the cage eyeing up the food - as soon as I let him in he's gonna scoff the lot! Little piglet  :?

Honestly, I'm sure I won't be like this if I ever have kids, what is it with bunnies that makes us totally dote on them! :D
