Do Rabbits really need a pellet or mix feed?

Or will they be fine with unlimited hay, grass and meals of vegetables/greens/fruit etc?

What's your view?

Louise

I think it sort of depends. I don't think just hay/grass is enough as a wild rabbit wouldn't just eat grass. They eat a range of vegatation (weeds). If you feed a wide enough range of veggies/herbs/greens that encompasses all the required nutrients then hay/greens diet could be okay.

However a wild rabbit also gets sunshine, they need that to process the calcium in their food. House bunnies won't necessarily get enough of this meaning they could end up with a vit D deficiency. Pellets contain vit D.

I think many rabbits are given too many pellets but personally I'd stick to giving them small amount a day rather than none.

If I could be sure that my bunnies were getting all the vitamins they needed from the hay and veg they get each day then I wouldn't feed any pellets. Because I worry that they don't get all their vitamins, I supplement with pellets. In the summer, they'll be out every day eating grass and getting some sun and so I'll probably cut out the pellets completely.

Both would be nice, though I feed Toby Mix rabbit food as he HATES pellets. He hates them to the point where he would rather starve. I have a full bag of super rabbit excel and he hasn’t touched it. Such a faddy rabbit.

I have voted NO, as long as a rabbit is fed a wide variety of grasses, hays, vegetables, herbs etc. I do however feed a small amount of pellets...

I have put 'not sure' as I have read on numerous occasions that it is possible to feed buns on just hay and veg but mine always seem to be starving and in desperate need of their pellets. They are out in a shed and I feel they need the extra feed in the winter to keep them warm. They get more pellets in the winter than they do in the summer.

I have feed my buns only pellets since the time I got them but recently have been giving them hay each morning. The place where I get their feed told me that the pellets have all the vitamins etc that a bun needs and the hay is just something extra. My buns act that way too....when I scoop the pellets out they just stand there looking at me...when I grab the hay they all start doing the binkey! Even Saphirre who is most calm bun you will ever meet and Maple who weighs close to 20lbs! It is quite a sight! :D
