Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I Hope some one can help :) I have A rescued bunny that is blind  , the trouble is she gets a lot of eye ulcers and it's stressing her out, and costing me a furtune going back and forth to the vet, is there an Antibiotic eyedrop or ointment I can get from a chemist or a pet shop that will help, and save her the stress of going to the vets.
Thanks for any help
Manda :D

Often when a problem's persistant, the vet can give you something to apply yourself when it comes back, without having to go see them first. Next time you take the bun to the vet, why not ask? They *should* be helpful, as they do understand how much they cost! If they're not helpful, try seeing another vet, maybe?

Hi satattie; :D Nice to find a familar name. I still have a few teething problems but nothing to bad photos, surname and that. :? nothing that can't be ironed out

Has the vet suggested reasons why she might be getting frequent ulcers? For example has he checked for eyelashes that curl around and irritate the eye or grow where they shouldn't, lowered tear duct production (so the eye is drying out), muscle or nerve damage stopping the eye from closing properly etc.

Do you know what caused you bunnies blindness? Is it a result of frequent ulcers? Is the other eye effected at all?

You mind find something simple like fake tears will help if she isn't making enough of her own as they keep the eye moist.

How good is you vet? It might be worth going to see a rabbit specialist or getting refered to an eye specialist. It could cost a little more but if they short out the problem save a lot in the long run.

Thank you all for replying to me :) The vet I take her to always give her a compleat looking over, she was rescued with her mum because she was blind. when we first got her last summer she had very bad lumps on her eyes, and after having lot of tests that is what was found, I think the main trouble is she is with her mum, Thumper is trying to help by licking the eyes making them sore. The problem she gets most is little white spots on the centre of her eye mainly her right one.

Zeus has had an ongoing eye problem for a while now. Not as bad as your bunnys but he will need daily eye drops. The vet has agreed to set up a standing order every month and post them to me so I don't have to keep going back and forth (they are 40min away). They also want to see him back for check ups but only if I think the problem is getting worse.

Hi there

I have a bunny who went blind four years ago. I saw a couple of vets when she first went blind, even a very good rabbit vet, but they are so often just not experienced enough with eyes. In the end I took her to an ophthalmologist - expensive I know - and I get her rechecked once a year.

This lady I saw is worth her weight in gold, and although the very good rabbit vet was quite sure she should have her eye taken out in one case when there was a change and some bleeding in the eyeball, the specialist assured me this would not be necessary and in fact everything settled down as she had predicted.

I agree wholeheartedly with Tamsin. For us humans, eyes are so precious, and small things can cause a lot of pain. I for one would want a specialist who knew exactly what they were looking for and talking about with my own eyes..... and in the long run, seeing a specialist has saved me a lot of money with my bunny.

Hope this helps. Did you say whereabouts in the country you were??

Hiya...

Hi There,
Im sorry to here your bunny has poorly eyes.
My bunny had to have one of his removed,
It had become ulcerated and infected.
It started with a white patch in the centre of his eye which steadily grew.

He is alot better know and manages just fine with one!
Just Look!
