  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Paracetamol in bunnies

Sky-O

Wise Old Thumper
Anyone used it? Have any thoughts on it?

I have an end of life bunny with a painful tumour. I’m not convinced that Metacam and Tramadol are giving him the relief I want and my vet said they have discovered paracetamol can be used in rabbits now.

Anyone got any experience?

I would use it in an end of life situation to make the rabbit more comfortable. My dog has had it under direction of his vet

I vaguely recall Frances Harcourt-Brown opening a discussion about it on her Facebook page ages ago. There was talk about using Calpol in an emergency situation when it wasn't possible to get to the vets. I also seem to remember Molly Varga joining the discussion with positive comments about its use in rabbits. Sorry that I can't remember better details.

Edit to add, I found the post by searching for "rabbits Calpol" on Facebook, it was in 2017.

Further addition:

This is a quote I lifted from the above discussion from three years ago.

Molly Varga: "I'm starting to use paracetamol both orally and IV in hospital. Seems to be well tolerated."

When I looked back on that, I was actually the discussion I mentioned to you on FB where Frances had to tell people off for bickering! Their comments are deleted now.

I don't know how to post a link to the discussion but if you search "Calpol rabbits" then click the "posts" option hopefully it will bring it up.

I'll have a go. If you never see me on FB again you'll know something went wrong

Despite this all being very interesting, sadly it won’t be needed. Bunny was PTS last night.
