Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Slight head tilt

Young Bun
Hello,

I have just noticed today that one of my rabbits is ever so slightly tilting his head to one side.

I've uploaded a picture but it is a little hard to see as it really is only a slight tilt.

Do you think this could be the beginning of something more sinister like an ear infection? He seems completely normal in himself.

The picture is: http://rhsapp.com/loki-head.jpg

Yes, if he is doing that more than once, it is certainly something that you need to get checked out at the vets.

I agree that you need to have a vet check your bunny. If he does have an ear infection it can quickly progress to more severe tilt, circling, falling over, etc. Sometimes you can even see nystagmus in one or both eyes. If it is treated early the prognosis can be good as I experienced several times over the years. Some doctors treat for EC in addition to ear infection because symptoms similar. Sending you some positive vibes for a full recovery.

So we took him to the vet today and she said he had a little discharge in the ear but may also be a parasite.

She has given us treatment for both. We gave him the ear drops and he hated it the poor little thing. Was itching his ear for an hour after.

Does anyone know how a house rabbit may get a brain parasite or an ear infection so i can try and prevent it in the future and also protect our other rabbit.

Thanks for the replies

My bunny got oral or injected antibiotics for infection, not drops. If EC may get from mom and not have symptoms for long time.

It sound as though your Vet suspects that Encephalitozoon Cuniculi (EC) may be a possibility, as well as a bacterial ear infection. Some information on both conditions here :
