  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My rabbit is weirdly behaving

Hello. My female rabbit is 4y 8m old. Today at 8am she was fine. But after that she is constantly moving her head on the right side, moving her eyes like pendulum, if released in the floor constantly circling in a space, falling over when trying to walk and appearing to be blind!!! All out of nowhere. I live in an Asian country where having pet is uncommon and having rabbit as pet is rare. Our vets know nothing about rabbits and the treatment of so-called specialist vets of the biggest vet hospital in the country resulted in the death of at least 2 of my rabbits in the past. Moreover due to covid crisis the govt converted the hospital in to dedicated covid testing facility!! Thus no way to get any help from anyone. Even though the reality seems inevitable to me, please share with me if anything i can do for her. thank you.

Hello

Your Rabbit appears to be exhibiting neurological symptoms which can be caused by things like bacterial infection (middle/inner ear infection), a specific type of protozoal parasite, Encephalitozoon Cuniculi, which causes neurological damage, amongst other things, or possibly the ingestion of a toxic substance.

If it is totally impossible for you to access any type of Veterinary Care then sadly all you can do is to try to keep your Rabbit as comfortable as possible. I would suggest placing her in a confined space as she sounds to be very disorientated. This will be very distressing for her. I'd also try to make sure that she is not too hot or too cold and that the area she is confined to is quite dark.

Is she still eating and drinking? Is she passing faeces and urine ?

I'm so sorry your bunny is experiencing this. I agree with what Jane posted above. Keep bunnies environment quite dark & as quiet as possible. If she likes your company she will probably appreciate you being quietly close to her. Try tempting her with wet greens -cilantro is popular. This is a really stressful thing to go through even with available meds & good vet care. I hope she'll be ok

I echo what Jane says.

Keeping her comfortable, clean and eating are essential.

Without a vet check, it's impossible to tell what you are treating. If one of mine presented with the same symptoms and definitely no injury (eg head or spinal), I would expect a vet to prescribe antibiotics (for possible ear infection), suitable wormer (in case of EC parasite - typically Panacur), and pain relief / anti-inflammatory (such as Metacam).

Can you speak to a vet and discuss this at all? Even being able to get hold of eg pain relief / anti-inflammatory could make a difference.

I wish you well. There are people on here who can advise on specific issues eg how to feed her if she isn't eating for herself, making a safe area for her, etc.

Agreed.
