Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

excessive scratching

my older rabbit smokey has just got into the habit of scratching, she used to do it before but now shes liek doing it all the time, could it be a sign she needs her nails cutting? shes only about 6 months old so I would have thought it would be too early also I have a rabbit in the hutch below her so do you think she might be sensing her?

Just a guess but maybe its a problem with her skin or fur rather than her nails. If the buns only scratching ears it could an irritation in the ears or a small infection.

I take it you mean she's digging? It's usual for rabbits (usually females) to do this. I wouldn't think it's any cause for alarm. Snowball does it all day and it's good exercise for them providing there's nothing which could cause the rabbit any harm.

Has she been spayed? Could be that she's thinking about making a burrow.

Scratching the floor or herself? If it is the floor it is natural digging behaviour and you could find something she can practise on like an old rug or mat so she doesn't damage the floor ;), if it is herself it could be an infestation of mites!

She prob wants to dig, natural behaviour :) My bun absolutely adores digging, she is nearly to Australia with one of her holes at the mo lol. If they don't go outside to dig can you make her somewhere to dig, like a big dog basket filled with earth or something similar? My bun comes out looking filthy but she enjoys herself :) We always joke that they could have used her when they were building the Channel Tunnel
