Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Abscess - surgery and aftercare

Hi,

I have a house rabbit who is coming up for two years old. After multiple vet visits regarding what I thought were dental issues and finding my vets not to be too helpful, I took my rabbit to a specialist and he has been found to have an abscess caused by an overgrown tooth. Unfortunately, it has spread to the bone so it can be treated but not fully cured now. They've said it's likely that the abscess will return but are unable to give a time frame.

I just wanted to know if anyone has had a similar situation, if you went ahead with they surgery and what the aftercare was like?

I am sorry that your Rabbit has a Dental abscess. At least you have managed to get her seem by Specialist and hopefully the proposed surgery will go well. Aftercare will depend on the exact nature of the surgery. But it is likely to include ongoing medication ( antibiotics, analgesia) and possibly flushing of the abscess cavity. The Specialist should give you a lot of information regarding the specific care your Rabbit will need :)
