  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

How old too old for neutering

At what age would you definitely NOT neuter a
Rabbit? My older male rabbit is chasing my dog around the house trying to mount her. She’s a Maltese shihtzu so she’s not that much bigger than my rabbit LOl.
I’m not sure how old Bailey is Maybe anywhere between 6 and 10.

Each case would need to be judged individually, not just based on the age of the Rabbit but also if he/she has any other health problems etc. So a full clinical work up by a Rabbit savvy Vet would be needed.

I will say that castrating an older Rabbit may not resolve all the the behavioural issues. Humping may continue as a learned behaviour.

I’m at my wits end now. While he’s interested in my dog, he runs circles around her and this morning I noticed he’s weeing on the carpet while running in the circles. Ugh ! I’m not sure what to do. He was a rescue bunny and I have set up a condo inside for him and he has free range of the house for most the day but now with this humping behaviour and the peeing I don’t know what I’m gonna do.
My little dog is a softy and has put up with all the bunny harassment so far but I know this can’t go on.

This is only as a short term suggestion, but maybe give him a cuddly toy? It might distract him from your dog. I think regarding any neutering I would discuss how to progress this issue with my vet.
