lifespan of rabbits

Griffski

Warren Scout
I have 2 five year old rabbits. When one was at emergency vet recently for stasis (it was a mild attack with fast recovery) he said i should be expecting it at her age implying she was reaching end of life.

My bunnies are cross breed - one is lionhead cross, the other is a lop - both are 2.5kg in weight. When I initially acquired them I was thinking 10-12 years might be realistic, from web reports, but I now understand that might only apply to smaller bunnies. Mine live outside 8-9 months of the year and are indoors in room for winter months.

Just wondered what forum experience was - i.e. how long might i expect from normal size bunnies (accepting that noone has a crystal ball re my bunnies as individuals :) ) ?
thanks !

My oldest Bunny was 14, a small cross breed lop Buck

I would say you would expect them to live much longer than 5 years of age, but sadly I’ve had some die at much younger ages, and some that have lived until over 10. If my vet were to imply that 5 years was old I would be looking for another vet ;)

Thanks - that's reassuring ! It was an emergency vet (non bunny specialist) and not my regular vet and i must admit i was taken aback by the comment (especially at a time of stress) though since the same establishment (different vet) literally saved her life in February (when she had severe stomach distension) lots of latitude earned.

I just wanted to know whether i needed a reality check... am encouraged you have both had bunnies that have lived to over ten and even if mine don't it's good to know the potential is there for a few more years:)

My oldest bunny is 7 years old and he still acts like a baby, doing zoomies and binkies all of the time :)
