  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bunny with arthritis - glucosamine, turmeric etc

One of my buns is only 4 but has been diagnosed with arthritis :( She’s on daily metacam but I’m looking at supplements too, such as glucosamine, and turmeric. She won’t eat the oxbow joint cookies. Please could you tell me if you’ve had any luck with supplements and how you gave them to your bun? I’ve seen some people use arthriaid but I can’t see the ingredients online, I looked at it years ago but seem to remember it had pork in!

I have a Bunny, Endeavour, who was diagnosed with early onset arthritis before his 2nd Birthday  I do give him the Oxbow Joint Support, would your Bunny eat them if you crushed them up ??

Mind you whether they actually help or not I dont know as Endeavour is also on conventional medication (Metacam and also Tramadol when having a bad episode) he also has massage therapy and heat therapy.

There is also Acupuncture and Laser Therapy too

Not sure if these links are of any use to you

Re the Arthi Aid- the ingredients are listed on here :

Thank you for your reply and those links, I found that active ingredients list thanks but it doesn't seem to say the full list eg water, glucose, etc, but I think I'm going to chance it anyway seeing as a few bunny people have mentioned it on this forum (albeit old posts). I've tried crushing and mixing the Oxbow treats but she ignores it even when mixed with banana!
I'm sorry to hear about Endeavour, it's so sad they get arthritis so young. He's a lucky bun having the therapies you give him :)

I hope your Bunny can remain as comfortable as possible with treatment. Endeavour is almost 7 now and whilst he does have flare ups of pain from his arthritis on the whole he has coped well for the 5 years since diagnosis. He is certainly still a happy Bunny
