  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Calluses / sore hocks

Zigzag

Alpha Buck
My bunny Zigzag has always had a callus on both of his back feet- and the vet had always assured us that they’re nothing to worry about. (We mainly go to CJ Hall). But I noticed one of the calluses fell off last night, and I’m concerned the skin underneath may bleed - does anyone have any experience/ advice?

Thanks

Can you post a pic of the affected hock ?

What sort of substrate is Zigzag kept on ?

What breed is he ?

Hi Jane, he’s a Dutch (the one in the photo) and is 9 y/o. He takes metacam twice a day now for arthritis.

He’s mostly free range and is on rugs, carpet, and a bit of wood floor. I’ll take a photo later, as it’s a bit tricky to take one on my own! Thanks for responding.

It could be that his arthritic pain is not being well controlled now and you may want to discuss additional treatment with your Vet. This may include increasing his Metacam dose (after first checking his renal function via blood test) and/or adding Tramadol to his pain relief. Acupuncture, Cold Laser Therapy and Physio/Massage can also be beneficial to arthritic Rabbits.

Carpet is very abrasive and this can exacerbate sore hocks. Covering the carpeted area with cotton sheets often helps
