Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Liquid form of ranitidine - anyone able to still get hold of it?

My specialist and local vets can't get hold of it now, really worried as this is the only thing that kept Doughnut well from her acid reflux, it also helped with her slow gut mobility. My specialist is going to try and find an alternative, just wondered if there is any stock anywhere!!

I take it myself and obtain it on an NHS prescription. Maybe if Mark did you a prescription you could obtain it from a Pharmacy ?

I've tried that but no pharmacies that I've called have it, they said everything has been recalled.

We had this problem too - our vets have instead prescribe it in tablet form and we dissolve each tablet in some water before then giving via syringe. I think the dosing is slightly different as our prescription went from liquid three times a day to one tablet twice a day. Dusty has been completely fine since we swapped - no problems. They do not know when it will be back available in liquid form

My only irritation is that (with my vets at least) it’s around double the price in tablet form

Thanks everyone. I couldn't see the tablet form anywhere either. She's on two different tablets anyway so may as well give a third. If your vet can still get it then that sounds hopeful

If the active ingredient is still available, and the meds are not commercially available you may be able to have the prescription compounded in liquid form at a special pharmacy. The downside is the cost. Shelf life is also something to question since some meds lose potency quickly once suspended in liquid.

as far as I know it’s only the liquid version that has been recalled so it is still available in other forms.

I've been given omeprazole. I actually take it myself! I'll start her on it in about 3 weeks when the ranitidine runs out. My specialist said he thought it was better but unfortunately it doesn't speed up her metabolism. So may need to add in gut meds but will see how she goes.

I really hope that the Omeprazole is a suitable alternative for Doughnut xx

My Yorkie, Jenna, takes 0.2 mls. Omeprazole every day to protect her stomach from the prednisone she's on but I find I have to add sucralfate because the Omep gives her diarrhea. Not sure if this will happen in rabbits.

I hope it works out for you or that eventually ranitidine will return to supplies in the UK. xxxx
