  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

When do you know when to say goodbye

New Kit
This is leo, she is 3 months old, at 5 weeks old I took her vet regarding her legs was told that her bones are growing in the wrong places and there isn't anything they can do, keep her in small cage so she can get around easier and just give her best life till she cant get around anymore. since then her legs have gotten worse, her front paw is facing backwards, other front paw is to side, one back leg is out to side and other back leg is slightly out to side but she still gets around and loves coming out and doing her kinda binky. Yesterday there was an accident when I was away from her for couple hours where she got her legs wrapped tightly up in her blanket (no idea how she managed that) we got her lose and she wasnt walking much. This morning she walking more but still very much struggling, she doesn't seem in pain, but isn't really running around like normal, when she in her cage all she doing is laying down and sleeping, she still eating and drinking, so my question is how do I know if I should put her to sleep or not, I hate seeing her struggling to get around but she still doing little runs every now and then and still eatting, so how I can I put her to sleep. I'm heartbroken on what to do, and blaming myself for not noticing what happened yesterday sooner, I just dont wanna see her suffer, i saw this rabbit be born and she means wold to me.

In my experience with rabbits, when they're in a lot of pain they make a clicking sound with their teeth. Also they stop eating and lose their appetite. I think if your rabbit is eating well, that's a good sign. Being your bunny is so young I would be optimistic for it. As for the blanket, It may have pulled a muscle/joint injury, etc... fighting to get out. A vet visit would probably ease your mind if he's acting differently getting around after the incident.

I echo the views of Eagei above - you need to see a vet as a matter of urgency. I know you will be concerned but the vet will advise and act in the best interest of Leo.
Sending vibes for such an adorable little rabbit. xx

I would take her to see a rabbit savvy exotics vet and see if anything can be done, as she’s young possibly they may be able to. I know it’s very difficult but I would take the vets advice so long as they are rabbit savvy. You can ask for recommendations on here if you need them, or look on the rwaf list https://rabbitwelfare.co.uk/rabbit-care-advice/rabbit-friendly-vets/rabbit-friendly-vet-list/
Sending lots of vibes.

Yes I would definitely take her to an exotics specialist. Mine isn't any more expensive than a normal vets, in fact I'm there so often he doesn't always charge me for consult fees and if she stays in, bed and board is free :). They may have ideas on how you can help her and if there is an operation she could have. Since she's young I would say it's the best time to do it to give her the best quality of life as you can. You may think your vet is good until you see a specialist then you may find that you have more options than you thought. Good luck.

Poor Leo, she is so beautiful. I would definitely consider travelling to a specialist. Perhaps you could make her a sort of wheelchair to help her get around easier.

Poor little bun, sending gentle nose rubs.

You’ll know when she’s ready to go; she’ll lose interest in food and favourite treats, she might hide away, she’ll grind her teeth if she’s in pain... You’ll have to asses her quality of life - this is very hard, but she’ll trust you to do the right thing.

For now, lots of love and attention is probably what she needs xx

She is adorable. It may just take some time for her to heal if she has any bruising/inflammation from her tangle with the blanket. It sounds like she is otherwise happy, so stop blaming yourself.
