Medication costs - has anyone else heard about this?

So my husband came home the other day with Frank's tramadol medication which he takes for severe arthritis. He handed me the receipt for £53. I gulped a bit and said that I thought that tramadol was nowhere near that expensive. There must be some mistake. So I called the vet who explained that yes, it usually cost £11 but there had been a temporary international shortage of liquid tramadol so the price had gone up - a lot!! However, not to worry, it was back to £11 now.

Pretty annoyed that the vets hadn't pointed this out at the time as she did admit that probably tramadol in pill form would have been normal price. I feel like a small cog in a very large, inhuman machine. My vets were taken over by a hedge fund recently so I am thinking there is no point protesting. Just a warning to everyone to pay attention to vet medication bills which sometimes soar without warning.

dear bunny lover177,-tramadol-is a synthetic opiod,-I prefer it over Norco-regular codeine,--I pay $12--for [30 count]--50mg tablets.--I have severe medical conditions, and I refuse to take anything addictive.-we all experience pain, sometimes it is unbearable-but one must learn pain management, and know your limitations.-never give up,-after 14 years I have mystified the specialists-,i should write a book--sincerely james waller from the other-kent

Bobby is on tramadol twice a day but I just use the tablets and mix with abit of Burgess dual care.

Unfortunately if there's a shortage of a drug and we have to get the human form the cost is significantly more. It's happened with prednisone not long ago and the cost ended up about 5 times the price.

Problem is once the veterinary version comes back on stock we can't send surplus stock.of the human version back so we have to sell the expensive stuff first.

I wonder if you can get pet doses of it online? Probably not, but always worth investigating for cheaper stuff.

prescription meds and otc meds

dear buzzwizz619,--wow,alot of things to be said here,--lets start with [it is always advisable to follow up with the exotic dvm procedure],--without full knowledge of the med,can have very serious-results.-that given there are generic meds, online purchase-but like I am stating knowledge is a must..-you mention-prednisone,i donot like that stuff--[prednisolone-.5mg]-is more preferred-for allergies/pain/inflamation,etc.,-then again--you must consider the weight of the animal-for proper distribution.--this is more of an exact science than hit or miss, there is a severe penalty for mis diagnosis,as well as improper distribution.--please visit http://www.medirabbit.com this a very comprehensive link that could save your rabbit.--sincerely james waler from the other kent-usa:love::love::wave:

Bobbys medication is all given under veterinary guidance, my vets have no issue with me using tablets, they did offer me the tramadol transdermal gel encase I found that easier but after years of medicating rats I've kindda mastered the use of tablets and I find it no trouble.

Bobby isn't on prednisolone, I work at the vets so I was just using that as am example. We don't specifically order human meds when the supplier runs out of what we order they automatically send it as an alternative

Thank you Buzzwizz - that helps confirm what the vet said. I was just rather startled to be paying 5 times as much as usual! We could have waited for the meds as we order them well in advance. We will pay careful attention to prices of medication in future - lesson learnt!

dear buzzwizz619,-thank you for your response,--here is a link to the pharmacy that I utilize frequently https://www.reliablecanadianpharmacy.com [1-800-897-1053]-with a dvm or yourself may be able to purchase opiods if the uk allows it,--I take many meds daily and order other meds for my critters---very reasonable prices..sincerely james waller from the other kent-usa

Yes Doughnut is on tramadol and my vets gave me the tablets instead of the medicine. I queried it and they said the tramadol was literally 10x more than before and the tablets are still cheap so I went with the tablets. She's on gabapentin anyway so I have to crush those up anyway.
