Eye removal due to abscess

Hiya,
I'm after info please, our 7 year old boy has had his eye removed today due to a abscess behind it which we suspect has been caused by a bite.
We have been dealing with a dental abcsess since April with one of our other bunnies but wondering if this will be any different.
He's at the vets overnight but want to be prepared for when we bring him home tomorrow.
Will it be similar after care? As in flushing twice a day until it heals from the inside?
Anyone any experience?

Sorry to hear that your bunny has to have an eye removed. I've no experience of this, so cannot really advise. Your vet should give you clear instructions though when you pick bunny up. Really hope everything goes ok, let us know when you can.
 
Hi :wave: I had a little rescue bun who was blind in one eye. After a while the eye looked sore & ulcerated so it was removed. my vet removed the eye & stitched the eye lid back together. Some weeks later I noticed bulging behind the wound & we found she developed an abscess. So she has a further op to remove the abscess & her eye socket left open (nowhere as near as gory as it sounds but my vet had prepped me well re: how it would look). This time she healed really well. If my memory serves me correctly there was some minimal cleaning but the abscess came out in one go so it was nothing like as "messy" as when I've had buns with dental abscesses.

No experience, though I wanted to send you some positive vibes for you and your bunnies.
I am sure you know that bunnies try to hide their discomfort, so pain medication you can give at home is very important. You bunny will likely feel much better now that the eye was removed.
 
One of my girls had her eye removed three weeks ago, after it ruptured (the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen!) and she came home 100% fine! I couldn’t believe how well she was, it was hugely swollen (like, seriously - golf ball size) for a few days, but she was eating, pooing, exploring as normal. She fought me at meds’ time which I took to be a good sign, and aside from her medication she needed no other intervention whatsoever from me. Hope your bun does as well as Rosie is!
 
Thank you for the replies, spoke with the vet nurse late last night and he's doing well. His wifebun is in the pen next to him, she's 12 bless her.
Our vet is newly qualified exotic pet specialist, I have every faith in her though. She's been amazing with our other 3 monsters.
Really want to be well prepared for him to come home, hopefully today and make sure we give him the best aftercare.
The vet managed to get the whole capsual out and is sending it for a culture.
I think I'm in shock still, last Wednesday I had a perfectly healthy bunny and now he's no eye. All from a bite from another bunny!
 
Pleased to hear that bunny is doing well after his op, hope he can come home soon and makes a quick recovery.
