  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

What could be wrong?

My new white rex lilac,i have noticed had a sore nose (it always stands out anyway as shes white) but last night it looked like it had been bleeding a little when i picked her up she sounded a bit snuffly.any ideas what it could be.i wanted to take them both for there mixi jabs today but not sure its such a good idea now

Bless her, perhaps she has a respiratory infection? Or perhaps she has been bitten on the nose? Only reason I say that is one of my buns bit the other on the nose a couple of weeks ago and it was bleeding and didn't look nice. Took her to the vet and after 2 weeks of antibiotics it has healed nicely. Vet was being extra cautious with regards healing cos she didn't want an abcess in her nose! I would def get her checked out by vet and if she isn't 100% I wouldn't have thought that the vet would give her Myxi jab, specially if she needs antibiotics. I don't think I'd feel safe giving jab if wasn't 100% as it obv affects immune system.

If it's a respiratory infection then again antibiotics (my other bun had this 3 weeks ago! - keeping vets in business!) She had antibiotics and decongestant powder for a week and went away nicely. Also put Olbas Oil on a flannel outside her hutch and it worked wonders!!

I would def take her 2 vet for a check up 2 b on safe side, I hope Lilac soon feels better, if it's either of the above then I can tell you it didn't take too long to resolve :)

Maybe she was chewing on her cage bars and it’s just rubbed her nose while doing so. Sure she will be fine tho :)

poor lilac she has a very snuffly chest so she couldnt have her vaccination shes on a weeks worth of baytril.
she said it could turn to a respitory infection

Hi,

If the rabbit has a scab on it's nose its worth checking their vent to see if this is the same...it could be Vent Disease that when they lick the offending area it passes to their nose/mouth area.

Unfortunatley there is no cure for this

Hopefully you've caught it early enough Marie, give her a wee gentle ear tug from me instead of a nose rub

I hope so too i just couldnt bare to loose another

Awww now Marie, I'm sure it won't come to that. You were quick to get her to the vet and I'm sure she'll be fine. Our Whiskey has a snotty nose and she's fine too, just as cheeky, mischevious and perky as a normal bun. Although I know it's easy for me to say, but I don't think you should worry  Keep an eye on her poos cos she's on antibios, have you got some Recovery or Avipro on hand?

Awww bless her. As I said before my bun was very snuffly but the antibiotics worked wonders! And I found Olbas Oil worked a treat too. Really made her breath easier. It sounds like you have caught it early, give her hugs from me and my girls (specially from Pippa who can sympathise with the snuffling!) and I hope she gets better soon.
