Rescue rabbit problem with Eye advice needed?

I have just rescued a white mini lop rabbit. It’s a boy and his name is fin. He was kept in a dirty garage in a dirty hutch I think they were using saw dust or wood shavings for bedding. We have him indoors. He has a problem with his eye. It gets a bit watery and gunky and he has fur missing under eye. I’ve been cleaning it daily. It seems to have improved a little since we have had him.

The person I got rabbit from said she could not look after him any more. When I asked about his eye she said she had taken him to vets and had tried many things including eye drops and antibiotics but nothing helped

I don’t know if she actually has taken him to vets. She lied a lot to me so don’t know what to believe. I’m going to take him to my local Vet on Wednesday as want him to have a full check up. but wondered if any one has seen a rabbit with a eye like this and can give some advice as to what it could be and what I can do to help him.

It does not seem to bother him that much. He rubs his eye occasionally. He is a very happy, chilled out friendly rabbit.

I wanted to post a picture of him and his eye but don’t seem to be able to.

Any advice much appreciated

I would advise that he definitely needs to see a rabbit savvy vet. It could be his teeth or an infection or anything. Good luck and well done for saving him :)

I would take him to a Vet, today if possible. As you say his previous owner has been 'economical with the truth' he may not have been seen by a Vet at all. He may have a corneal ulcer, a bacterial infection and a runny eye can sometimes be a symptom of Dental problems. Mini Lop Rabbits being prone to Dental problems.

Your Bunny will also need his vaccinations (when he is well enough) so you can talk to the Vet about these too.

I agree with Jane. Sending you and your new boy some positive vibes. It is good to know his is being cared for properly now.
 
I also agree with Jane and I would also add, having a bunny with an eye problem not unsimilar to yours, that one possibility may be a blocked tear duct. All the antibiotics and eye drops in the world won't cure that, so definately finding a rabbit savy vet/exotic specialist will certainly give your bunny the best chance of a diagnosis.
You are doing the right thing keeping it clean - just water and soft cotton wipes is perfect.
He sounds like a very gentle rabbit and I'm sure will thrive with the love that you are giving him and now he has a safe and caring home, he will be much happier.
I hope you can find a rabbit savy vet and post an update on any diagnosis.
 
So pleased to hear that this bunny has now got the loving home he deserves. I hope your vet can found out and treat the problem with his eye. Please keep us updated with how he is doing.
