Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Kidney disease secondary to ear infection

rebeccalyn732

Young Bun
Long story short, my rabbit pepper has one kidney left that is functioning at >75%
Her protein levels are at 1.

She also has an infection in her ear which has led to the break down of her jaw and paralysis in her left side of her face.
They will not operate because of her remaining kidney.
There is not much hope to cling on to, so any advice or just anything in general would be helpful.
Im not sure how long she has got, shes lived with one kidney for over 6 months now and her protein levels went from 0.4 to 1
Is it possible to bring the protein levels back down, of her kidney stabilizes or goes down they might be able to relieve some of the pus in her abscess.
Can anyone help...

I am very sorry that Pepper is so poorly. What treatment is she currently on to support her Kidney function and to try to contain if not resolve her ear infection ?

Has she tested positive for EC . I ask as I am wondering if her renal problems are EC related or are they related to Uroliths/Nephrolithiasis

With regards to the ear infection, is it Otitis Externa (outer ear infection) or Otitis Media/Interna (middle/inner ear infection)

She had EC when she was young, this is ernest they believed to have caused her slow decline in her kidneys
She is currently on penicillin injections twice weekly for her eat infection.
And benzapril for her kidneys.
She has middle ear infection, or what is left of that ear canal

It sounds as though your Vet has her on appropriate supportive care. Unfortunately as you probably know, it would seem that palliative care is the only option. Have you discussed fluid therapy to add to her renal support. Sometimes subcutaneous fluids can help the Rabbit feel better within themselves. Some dietary modifications can also be beneficial-ie moderate calcium intake-so minimal alfalfa hay/alfalfa containing pellets, only feed low calcium veg. Restrict phosphate intake (so no carrots, banana, tomatoes)

Anabolic steroid injections can help stimulate appetite, reduce uraemia (raised level of urea in the blood), reduce muscle wastage and potentially aid the retention of electrolytes.

If blood tests suggest that Pepper is anaemic then Erythropoietin could be useful

is there any relation ship between the ear infection w/ the kidney? Or is it just a coincidence or 1 thing leads to another?

is the water level in your country high in Calcium? if so, can you give Pepper filter water or spring water or Reverse Osmosis Water?

If you have to do sub-Q, then the general course of action is 50 cc x 3 times per 24 hr. Don't give the entire 100 to 150 cc in 1 load. It's too hard on their organs.

Ear infection is from e.c
Kidney damage is also from e.c
She had this disease when she was 2 years old

that's right. I remember most of it now.

I help out garden variety of bunnies cases (the ones that I can offer help) at facebook, so sometimes I don't remember 1 rabbit from another.

Ear infection, is common in this forum on all sorts of rabbits. You can just randomly read thru some cases and see if other senior members have some alternative ideas on top of the regular treatments that your vet has given.

Are you giving sub-Q yourself? as it's quite easy to do. Let me send you a link on it at your facebook wall
