Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Any experience with lens luxation and glaucoma medication?

Hello

My 1.5 year old rabbit Eevie has a luxated lens - we have been seeing an ophthalmic vet and she was having 3 drops truspot and 2 drops acular in that eye each day. It is now being changed to cospot as the pressure is still above 20. In her other eye she has 2 drops cospot and 1 acular as a preventative measure (the vet said she could see the fibres that hold the lens in place in her good eye were a bit ‘wobbly’. The pressure in her good eye is fine.

Issue one is that this is the first luxated lens the vet has seen in a rabbit and I can’t find any information searching. Do any of you have any experience? As my rabbit is so small she is concerned about upping the number of drops as it may overload her system. She is a Netherland dwarf. Do any of you know if too many of these drops can have a negative effect?

Issue two is regarding having the eye removed. She doesn’t seem in pain (sill flops/binkies etc) but the vet did say often you don’t realise until the eye is removed how much better they seem. She isn’t keen on removing at this point as there is some sight still. Lens removal is an option but the anaesthetic risk is high and it may not improve anyway.

My biggest concern is having the eye removed when her ‘good’ eye shows some very early issues. She is only young so I wondered if you have any experience of young rabbits having glaucoma in one eye and then in the other- how long was it kept under control for? Did your rabbit eventually lose sight in both eyes?

She has a mate and I know blind rabbits can get by fine- I’m just worried and want to know what to expect and if she has a good chance with the drops, or if I need to accept she will be blind eventually.

Thanks so much for your help!!

So sorry to hear that Eevie has an eye problem, I have no experience of this, so cannot offer any advice I'm afraid. Im sure there will be others members come along, who have had experience that they can share with you. I really hope that you and your vet can decide the best way forward for your bunny xxx
