  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Been away a LONG time. Anyone remember me and can offer any help??

Hi everyone,

Wow, it's been about 4 years since I last logged on. I hope you and your buns are all well and that some of you remember me (I had a beautiful orange Rex called big who was killed by a police dog, if anyone remembers that??)

Anyway, I still have my big British Giant cross Teddy (now 6) and my grey belgie cross called Little (now 8).

It's her I'm writing about.

Basically I've seen the fall over while grooming - definitely once, maybe twice. The only time I definitely remember was about 2 months ago maybe. I thought it was cute. Yesterday I saw a video of a bun doing the same on a Belgie group on FB and have heard it's a symptom of something called degenerative myelopathy, which is apparently common in belgies. I don't have much info from google, it seems to mainly be about dogs. Have emailed the specialist exotics animal hospital nearby to get an appointment but can anyone offer any thoughts, experiences, advice (or maybe give me some hope??).

I literally can't stop crying when I think about it.:cry::cry::cry:

It's nice to be back xxxxxx

I had a Netherland Dwarf who used to fall over while grooming his back end when he got older: we always assumed it was arthritis or similar! It was never enough of a problem that we sought vet advice (partly because it was the 90s and we didn't know any better), but he did have to be poo checked more often and get it cleaned/clipped off more often from about 8 years old. He lived until he was almost 11.

You really need to get a proper vet examination. The obvious things to get checked out at the vet are arthritis, inner ear infection and EC. All will contribute to poor balance and could be acting in combination as well. You may end up with (for example) antibiotics, panacur (28 days for EC) and metacam (anti-inflammatory for arthritis and EC, plus pain relief) to cover all bases and see what happens after a couple of weeks.

Nice to hear from you again.

Thanks for the advice guys - I wasn't sure if falling while grooming was a 'smoking gun' symptom and I just didn't know about it, or whether it could be many things. Going straight for the exotics vet - not messing around this time with the high street ones!

Hello, I remember you and your bunnies well  I don’t have experience of this so I can’t advise. I hope that the vet can help, sending lots of vibes to Little xx

Sorry to hear about Little, really hope the vet visit goes well, sending loads of vibes for her xxx

Hello again !! I remember you well. I *think* you used to see Mark Rowland at Trinity Vets ? If you are still doing so you can be assured that you will receive the very best advice for Little. I really would try not to think of 'worst case scenarios' at this stage ( I usually do just that ), there are many relatively minor reasons why a middle aged Rabbit has balance issues. Please keep us updated if you can xx

Jane!! I remember you well. You were the one that knew what was wrong with Bog when no one else did. Thanks for replying and thanks for your thoughts. I've moved but I'm told there's an excellent exotics specialist in Camden near where I am so she'll be going there. I hope she's just getting a bit old and there's nothing seriously wrong. So nice to hear from you. I remember your beautiful velvet bunnies [emoji16]

Hello Schtoffen! Welcome back! I do remember you and your bunnies.

My minirex used to fall over grooming quite a bit and he had more of an arthritic condition. Something eminently treatable and kept manageable with medication.

I hope the vet can give you a less dire diagnosis for your Nethie. All the best and brightest healing vibes on the way to you for your wee ones. :) xxxxx

Would that be at The Beaumont ?? Had lots of dealings with them myself earlier this year. You will be in very safe hands. Good luck xx
