Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Fennel and Dill?

bunny babe

Wise Old Thumper
We are still having to encourage Rambo to eat (he is bright in himself) after a dental and empty (rumbling) stomach. I was wondering if anyone had fed fennel an dill to their bunnies and if they were safe and if they have any medicinal effects?

He has gone off some foods and we are supplementing his intake by hand feeding when necessary.

Just awaiting a delivery of fibrefirst as he is refusing 5 different varieties of hay! He had a dental so this is not teeth.

We are in touch with our vet on progress.

Yes, I feed the leaves of both, but sorry I don't know of any medicinal effects. Both go down very well here.

Both should be fine to feed. Fennel normally goes down well with picky bunnies here. Not tried dill as I don't grow it. Both are easy to eat and have quite a strong smell, so it does tend to tempt them to try it. Dandelions are also good (all parts).

Great - thank you. I will get some today and see what he thinks of them.

I was just thinking that the gripe water he has been having has dill in so guessed it was probably safe. We are going to make him a herb garden he can reach to himself easily too (currently pots of coriander/parsley/thyme all over the place  )

can they only eat leaves and not the bulb part?

Sorry, I worded that badly  Yes, they can eat the bulb, but I've never fed that, so don't know if they would find it tasty. We have wild fennel and we grow dill, so we just feed the leaves of both.

Dill is the first herb my rabbits will start eating whenever they’ve been off food! We know there is something wrong if they turn it down
