Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Molar extraction question

Orenoko

Mama Doe
Teddy is off for another dental tomorrow, it's been about 2 months since his last one. The vet mentioned potentially thinking about molar extraction in the future as a more permanent solution, which has been on my mind for a while. I think it's something I need to consider as this must be his fifth dental in maybe seven months or so? As the left side of his face his paralysed I don't think there will be any improvement with his eating long term so it's either commit to repeated dentals or look at extraction.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience of bunnies with molar removal and how it has been, both in terms of the procedure itself, recovery and on an ongoing basis? I know they would have to remove upper and lower molars on the offending side, but would this impact the molars on the 'good' side? Or do people tend to take all molars out completely when going down this route?

How do people find mashing up of food etc afterwards? He's a remarkably resilient bun given everything he's been through with his head tilt, and I've no doubt that he could adapt to life without teeth, I was just thinking about the practicalities of adapting diet for toothless buns! He's not a great hay eater (which is half the problem) but he does like hay cookies, fibafirst, veg and forage etc. Would a rabbit with no molars still be able to eat these things with the right adaptations in place?

Sorry in advance for all the questions!

Molar extraction is a far more major procedure than incisor extraction and IMO I would only want a very Rabbit Savvy Vet skilled particularly in Dentistry to carry out the procedure. Exactly what molars would need to be removed will depend on the individual case. I cannot see a scenario whereby a Vet would suggest removing all molars in a case such as Teddy's. Molar extraction is not generally considered appropriate to prevent regrowth of molar spurs

Is your Vet an Exotics Specialist ?

Thank you Jane, you always have so much information!! [emoji846] I will try and have a read over my lunch break or later this evening.

My regular vet has just left the practice and the man I saw this morning said he would want to consult a specialist, so I think it would be a matter of a referral. He is such a tricky one to manage, he's happy but the recurring dental issue are our main problem, I just don't know what's best long term. I need to read up so I can be better informed!

ETA I just read the links you sent and it makes more sense now. The vet doing the dental has worked on him before so I'm not concerned about that side of it, perhaps I need to ensure my appointments are with her in future as the man I saw today didn't seem overly confident.
