  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit eye

Dean01

New Kit
I've had my rabbit for 14 years now and over the weekend he has developed an eye problem, his right eye is watery and it's red around it, he sometimes closes it, he appears to be fine and doesn't itch near it. What is the problem?

I'm not sure but I'd take him to a rabbit savvy vet to get it checked out, it might be sore and uncomfortable for him, something may have aggravated it, or it could be an infection. Very hard to say online, I hope you can get him seen and get some answers asap :)

He needs to see a vet. It could be trauma, local infection, signs of other infection (eg if he's not fully vaccinated), or there could be a foreign body in there (often hay or fur). It needs a professional examination and appropriate treatment to avoid long term problems.

14 years, wow! Congratulations.

My rabbit had a very red and sore eye last month and the vet gave us an antibiotic ointment to drip into his eye and it started healing up very quickly.

Welcome to the Forum

You need to get your rabbit to a vet.

In the meantime, you can bathe the affected eye with a cotton wool ball soaked in cooled boiled water twice daily.
