Confusion over RWAF listed vets

Lisa1981

Mama Doe
I contacted a vets in Epsom (that is on the RWAF list and is accredited as silver) to be told that they don’t think they have more knowledge or understanding of rabbits then most vets.

I’m fed up with only finding really bad rabbit vets in my area and thought using the RWAF list would be a better option being relitivly new to rabbits after the last desister which was extreamilly bad and had me and my daughter in tears.

Just so confused right now.

Oh I'm sorry, that's really weird tho!

Was it a receptionist you spoke to? :S

what vets in epsom was it if you don't mind me asking?

I use one in epsom and I think they're brilliant. they are/were on the RWAF vet list but their bunny specialist vet left. that being said though, every single one of the vets who I have seen have been utterly amazing and very clued up on rabbits. the usual vet who I see knows a whole lot and knows what to do and what not to do, and another one who I saw in an emergency (for both Luna & Orion) was also incredibly clued up. seen a few nurses for pre op and post op checks and they've been brilliant too.

I think if its the one I use, they're telling you that as they don't want you to think they're an exotics vet or a rabbit specialist. they're not - but they do know what they're talking about. they also told me the same, but I told them I wasn't looking for an exotics or specialist, just a vet who knew and understood rabbits.

with the RWAF vet list also it doesn't mean the practice as a whole, its usually just one or two vets that are there who you need to make sure you see.

I don't think any on the list would call themselves a rabbit specialist, even the exotics vets.

Yes it was a receptionist I spoke to. Just didn’t expect that response. Also had a vet ring me back who said they may just refer to a specilist as would prob just give pain meds.

It is Ewell vetanary center in Epsom.

Sounds like you found a really good vets there.

I have an appointment on Monday for Harlequin so will ask more questions then.

I just don’t seem to be very good at this ( but then I’m not much good at communicating with people in gental any way) but will see what happens Monday.

SarahP- I didn’t ask for a specilist. I asked if they had any one who had experiance with rabbits or an interest in rabbits and that was the response I got.

thats the one I use, odd. really silly but what time of day did you call? there's a new receptionist on and she is..awful. no manners or anything of the sort! she seems to be on in the afternoons. she is very grumpy and I have seen her snapped at somebody who had just had their pet PTS. no idea why she was hired or why on earth she picked a job in customer service.

I really can't recommend the ones in Ewell enough. I'm sorry you've not really gotten the experience you should have :(

I see Kylie there, she's amazing. theres also the vet I've seen for emergencies but her name escapes me. everybody is amazing there but its that one receptionist. I'm not sure why they would have told you no when they've been incredibly well informed for me and clued up. I really do have no complaints.

I know they told me that they weren't a specialist or an exotics when I called them, as I wanted a second opinion on Luna's blindness. tbh with you I didn't need an exotics or a specalist, just somebody who would listen and give me a well rounded assessment. my old vets had the attitude of "well she,s blind, it doesn't matter" when I wanted to know was this neurological, trauma, genetic. they've always listened and been very very thorough with examinations. they've never tried to rule something out either without exploring it first, such as my old vets refused to look into Luna as she was "too young to have arthritis".

I'm sorry you've not had the right experience :( I really can't recommend them enough and I don't know why they'd almost try to turn you away :?

I have been to a vet in that area called Corner Vet and I used to see David More who was brilliant. He has left and I don't know what the other vets are like there.

BinkyCodie- That’s reassuring then. I’m not after a specilist just some one who can treat my girls with some knowledge and understanding of rabbits.

I rang at about 10am and the woman sounded really nice although did try and say I should be trying to find a vet closer to home as we travel by public transport. The second time I rang another receptionist did seem a bit off but I cant put my finger on why but again that was in the morning. The nurse I spoke to sounded ok ( not the vet as I stated above sorry so tired) and answered some questions I had but was the one to say would probably just give pain meds and possibly refer to a specilist.

I’m glad you find them really good. I’ll get there a bit early and have a talk with the receptionist and a shorter one with the vet ( I know they are really busy at the moment)

I just got so confused and worried over the response that I panicked.

I remember once I registered at a vets someone had recommended for guinea pigs. I wasn't exactly filled with confidence when the receptionist said 'dog or cat?'

It looks good. I like the fact they have vets on site 24/7 if I read that right.

Have registered with 5 vets since having the girls so I’m hoping this will be the last one.
Haha yeaa I'm pretty sure I'm registered with atleast 5 for Atticus and Clementine.. 2 for Penelope and Apricot.. [emoji38] 1 for Gus and 2 for Cottonball.. [emoji38]

There's a vet right near to my new house, it's on a dead end.. But like it's been made one and you can walk through to the next road but not drive..(hope that makes sense[emoji38]) And literally less than 15 steps from my house is a vets.. Idk if they're any good.. Might try there when I get a dog, that'd be super convenient [emoji38][emoji38][emoji38]

My vets who have exotic specialists.. I rang up to book in a spay.. They told me to starve the rabbit from the night before [emoji849][emoji38] I was like you sure about that? They had to check.. Sometimes I think receptionists can be really hit and miss!

I think Iv registered with one roughly every 3 weeks so far

Makes sense there was a place like that where I lived when I was younger. If the vets is any good it would be handy :)

The last vet I saw couldn’t do a blood glucose test and blamed it on the equipment after 3 tries then had me hold Harlequine whilst giving sub cut fluids and I didn’t want to hold her to tight as I’m always afraid of hurting them so she jumped off the needle twice ;( then I got given 300 doses of cisapride as he claimed it was the smallest bottle they did.
Diffrent vet at the same practice also gave me 130 doses of emeprid.

That’s why I’m willing to travel 90mins by public transport for a decent vet.
