  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Eye ulcer not healing

Has anyone experienced similar?
Noticed his eye was red and you could see an ulcer last Monday, got him in at the vets Tuesday where they put dye in to confirm the ulceration (even though you could see it anyway) theyve given him antibiotic eye drops to use for 7 days but it's still red and you can still see the ulcer.
His eye has been dry with no crusting but you can see he's having to forcefully shut it slightly
What do you all think? x

I think you have to determine the cause of the ulceration. This might be indicated by where the ulcer is and the shape of it. Sometimes ulcers are caused because the eye is swollen as in glaucoma, and then the eyelid doesn't shut properly and causes an ulcer.

There's a good product called Remend which contains hylauronic acid and this greatly speeds up healing. You can also use some regular eye drops eg Hyabak in between the antibiotic drops to keep the eye moisturised.

You can also bathe in cooled tea: obviously not to cure, but to soothe.

Poor Bunny, eye ulcers can be very sore. Did the Vet suggest any possible cause of the Ulcer ?

A well respected RU member, ('Santa'- who is now studying to become a Vet so does no post on here any more) posted this on another thread back in 2016 about eye Ulcer treatment

I had one like this several years ago in an elderly bun. It went on for weeks and weeks, eventually I got a referral to an ophthalmology specialist and he diagnosed dry eye - basically her tear production had stopped working properly because of her age, so her cornea kept on getting ulcered. He said you can use all the antibiotics in the world and it will never clear up until you also treat the underlying cause - otherwise it's like watering a plant but keeping it in a cupboard...you could water it as much as you like but it still won't grow because it doesn't have other things it needs like daylight. He added Hyabak eye drops to the treatment regime (you have to give these or similar drops half hr after the antibiotics otherwise they'll coat the cornea and the abx won't get to where they need to) and it cleared up lovely. The eye drops were for the rest of her life. I think there is an animal version now, called something like 'Remend'.
