First aid kit for rabbits

Young Bun
Hi, can anyone let me know if these are the right items for emengency use on rabbits? Anyone has used them, are they good?

* Infocal Gas relief
* I wanted to get pumpkin squash, but can only find attached one, can these be used on rabbits?
* I got some Metacam for pain relief from vet before, how long can this be kept for?

Thank you for any advices and suggestions.

Hi there

Good idea to have a first aid kit!

Infacol is an ace thing to have, as is organic baby food.
I haven't used one with sweet potatoes (and not sure I would tbh) but I have carrot, parsnip and apple and various fruit ones in stock here.

Regards Metacam, it can be used up to six months after opening, although my (savvy) vet has said that it's still effective up to 18 months after opening!

Metacam is a prescription-only medication and should only be used under veterinary advice. The data sheet says it keeps for 6 months after opening, if it is in the original container (ie not dispensed into another tub by the vet).

I keep apple puree baby food in stock. Apple and banana is available in pouches. The pouches don't have that long a shelf-life, so mine are kept in the fridge.

I also save the powder left at the end of a bag of pellets in a ziplock sandwich bag. They can made into a mush and used to syringe feed a poorly rabbit if you don't have any Critical Care type powder to hand.

I agree with Shimmer about the Metacam. Personally I dont use Infacol, I have used Gripe Water, this one

I keep a few pouches of Veg Puree baby food

Another good tip from Shimmer re saving the powder from the end of a bag of pellets, many Rabbits do not like the Critical Care feed that is usually prescribed for syringe feeding xx

I also use gripe water :)

my "first aid" kit contains
gripe water - can be administered for gas but tbh infacol and gripe water are much in the same

organic baby food - good for getting sickly bunnies to eat, or good for mixing in critical care. gives it an nicer taste too, and lubrication for the syringe.

critical care - while many bunnies do not like it, its a staple for the first aid kit (imho). its full of fibre and is a good recovery food. you can use pellets but I find some pellets nearby impossible to soak, or they just don't work as well as critical care. sometimes we have to give bunnies things they do not like lol

large 15ml syringes - good for syringe feeding critical care or baby food

small 1ml syringes - used for the smaller things, such as infacol

makeup wipe pads - I just keep them handy incase of needing to stop a wound, or clean something, or if I cut a claw too short having flour on a makeup pad to stop the bleeding is a bit easier for me at least.

I don't really have a kit but I do always have critical care, syringes(various sizes including huge ones for syringe feeding, infacol, corn starch for if I cut a nail too short (fingers crossed I don't, I haven't so far [emoji38]) gauze and saline (I have these anyway though as I have piercings, but used them to bathe things before) I do have metacam but I wouldn't use any without talking to a vet first, and tbh I'd get more dispensed, and I'll bin this one when it's been more than 6 months, I guess I'm keeping it for incase the world shuts down and a bun gets injured, I could always work out the amount and give it (but just to stress, I wouldn't do this normally, it really would have to be a zombie apocalypse type event [emoji38])

Can't think of anything else really, towels? I have bunny towels in various sizes, and puppy pads and vet beds, snuggle safes for warmth.. Pro/pre biotics if I want them to drink more, but apple juice in water works the same [emoji38] the coldpress pink lady apple juice goes down well here, but I can just pop out and buy that, same as baby food - with this I only stick to apple or banana ones or a mix of the two from Ella's kitchen :)

I find these very useful to keep in. I have a pile of old towels in a spare carrier for animal use. Snugglesafe heat pads are always handy. Puppy pads come in handy if a rabbit is confined or not very mobile, and if you are treating for suspected EC as the urine is soaked up and disposed of. I tend to use a puppy pad under a couple of layers of towel as a general floor covering for poorly buns.

Yea that's exactly what I use them for :) also towels for the bunny burritos [emoji38] and also after a spay or neuter when they forget what a litter tray is, so they aren't sitting in pee etc vet bed ontop of puppy pads work really well :D

If you don't have old towels Ikea do some cheap hand towels for like really cheap I wanna say like £1.50? And they're plenty big enough for burritos I bought like 6 when my bun had her knee ops, they wash well and they come in cute colours too :) if you have old towels use those though I didn't because I had binned them all.

Thank you all so much for the information and advices, all very useful.

Some more queries if you don't mind..

* any other thing can replace metacam for pain relief which can be found at home easily?

* I don't have the oxbow critical care sachets, but I have the excel dual care plus, can I use it as the same purpose?

* Sometimes I don't know how to figure out when they have early GI stasis or digestive problem. I had once heard funny noise from their tummy, so I believe it is the gas? What about digestive problem, what symptoms I can see?

Thank you.

* There's no real replacement for Metacam, as it's a prescription only drug.

* Excel dual care is also good :) You can also use mashed up pellets

* any other thing can replace metacam for pain relief which can be found at home easily? There is no safe non prescription analgesic that can be given, if you think your Rabbit is in pain for whatever reason it is essential you contact a Vet.

* I don't have the oxbow critical care sachets, but I have the excel dual care plus, can I use it as the same purpose? Excel DCP is fine and in my experience many Rabbits do like it.

But as we all know, our first port of call if we have a poorly Bunny should always be a Vet
