Dental vibes needed

Roarysbunmum

Young Bun
Just back from the vets with Roary who is really worrying me at the minute. He’s been a bit dribbly and a watery left eye recently so took him for a check up a week ago. Vet put him on daily Metacam and we both suspect he needs a dental but the vet doesn’t have the equipment to do it (small local vet). I have him booked in with a specialist bunny vet on Friday for a dental under GA but yesterday he’s gone off his food a bit and producing tiny poops.

I’ve bought all of his favourite treats, fresh herbs, veg, fruit, new toys etc anything I can think of to get him nibbling again. Today he’s eaten a couple of basil leaves but hasn’t touched anything else. Still giving him Metacam and he seems alert and running around the house although was fairly quiet yesterday. He’s a 7y.o house bun and hasn’t needed a dental before now.

Going to syringe feed him water and mushed up pellets as can’t get any critical care sachets. Bunny vet can’t see him before Friday. Any advice is as ever appreciated plus lots of healing vibes!

Sending lots of vibes for him. I found putting boiling water on pellets made it easier to make the mush, then let it cool. Maybe he would eat the mushed food with veg or fruit baby food mixed in? I would ask the specialist vet if there’s any chance of the dental today, as he’s stopped eating, or if he should have gut stimulants at least. My vet prescribes twice daily metacam, I would also ask the specialist vet if there’s any case to increase the metacam dose until the dental and/or give it twice a day, if he’s not in pain he will be more inclined to eat.

Thanks Zoobec, that’s exactly what I’ve been doing with his pellets - boiling water then leave to cool. I’m going to brave the shop crowds soon and get baby food, it seemed to help last time we had an episode. The bunny vet is on hols so can’t see him til Friday as that’s her first day back, my local vet gave me more Metacam and said to give an extra dose in the evenings, so 0.5mg twice per day instead of just a morning dose. If he gets any worse they will see him but are more limited as to what they can do. I’m an ex vet nurse so happy to try and get him through as best I can with syringe feeding etc. No improvement by this evening and I’ll take him back to get gut motility meds.

He couldn’t have done it at a worse time with Christmas tomorrow!

He’s in the best hands then! Fingers crossed for him xx

So sorry to hear this, sending lots of eating vibes for your little bun. Hope you manage to get some baby food today, I find that really does help xxxx

Sending lots of thoughts for your bunny xx

They really do pick the worst times to be ill don’t they!

I’m certainly going to try every trick in the book! I put him outside a little while ago and just spotted him nibbling some grass, bit more relieved now. I’m guessing the hard pellets are too sore for him to munch on.

Thanks everyone, yes they really do pick the worst times to be sick. Having said that, he’s coming with me to my parents over Xmas so will get extra snuggles and attention. Maybe this was his secret plan all along! Pets mum I’m definitely going to get some baby food, if not I’ll throw some stuff in a blender and make my own.

Ella’s kitchen or Aldi own make baby food in the pouches go down well with Frosty, he didn’t like the apple and banana one, but the apple, carrot and parsnips one he loved, so it might be worth buying a few different flavours:thumb:

Poor Roary  I am wondering if it may be advisable for you to contact the Vet again to request some Ranitidine (Zantac) as well as the Metacam. Ranitidine has the dual benefit of protecting the GI tract from ulceration -a Rabbit who is not eating much can develope GI tract ulcers. Metacam can cause GI tract ulcers if given on a relatively empty stomach- also, Ranitidine has prokinetic properties, increasing the gut motility in the lower GI tract. The Vet may also think it necessary to prescribe Metoclopramide, another prokinetic which works on the upper GI tract, increasing the rate at which food passes out of the stomach.
See pages 3/4 on this link

Given that Roary is going to have to wait for 4 days before his Dental it is really important that his GI tract motility is kept as good as possible. This will lessen the risk of complications after a GA.

I do hope that you will be able to keep Roary comfortable until he can have the treatment needed xx

Good advice :thumb:

Apple, carrot and parsnip is a good choice.

Sending loads of vibes x

I did call the vet earlier regarding ranitidine or similar and she disagreed. Told me to stop the Metacam for a couple of days and get him eating again. He’s been outside for a few hours and spotted him munching happily on grass. I’ve also stocked up on bunny favourites and he’s munched some celery. Baby food bought as back up as well as infacol just in case. Not sure I agree with what the vet said although I understand where she is coming from, he’s had his Metacam today so if I can keep him eating for now and decide tomorrow depending on how’s he’s doing. Don’t want to stop pain relief and risk him being too sore to eat but don’t want to give him Metacam and end up with a sore tummy causing him to not eat either!

I'd keep up with the metacam. He was struggling enough to need a vet & that pain needs managing til his dental. Lots of vibes xx

This is exactly who’s doing Roarys dental, I’ve already spoken to her on the phone and she seemed fab. Glad to have someone who can personally recommend her.

She is so lovely and very very knowledgeable he will be in the best of care there. I hope Roary recovers quickly after his dental. X

Thank you MM.
