Any recomendations for pet insurance

I am becoming the proud mummy of 2 beautiful neatherland dwarf rabbits in 7 days called Harlequin and Beauty. They are not 8 weeks until 17th of December so I won't be able to get insurance until they are with us but I was wondering if any one had any recomendations on which company's to avoid or company's they found really good.

I've only used Petplan myself, and so far have never had to make a claim for my bun, or my bridge bun. However, I have made several claims for my cat George, and never had a problem. I'm sure someone else will be along with much more experience. Good luck with new bunnies !

I would always make sure its a lifetime policy, or covered for life as PetPlan call it. Then you get a pot of money which all conditions dip into and it replenishes each year, meaning you can keep claiming for the same condition for your pets life. I made the mistake of getting a 12 month policy for my dog (before I worked at a vets and deal with insurance daily!) and he already has 3 conditions I can no longer claim for (or their related conditions), I like the company very much just a shame I chose poor cover. You can normally chose how much cover you have per year, we normally suggest the £4,000 per year is a good one for rabbits.

Do you know which provider this is? I was only aware of Helpucover/Petplan going up to £2,000 and you can chose an Agria policy that goes up to £2,500 but wasn't aware of anyone offering £4k. Most of my bunnies are with Pets at Home and that only goes up to £1.5k which is a bit worrying with my current vet's charges. It makes sense that the pot of money needs to be bigger as vets fees have increased massively in the last few years.

I was looking at petplan earlier. It looks ok and it's good to know you have never had a problem claiming from them.
Thanks for the luck I am a nervous pet carer although we have had many animals and currently have a hamster who has just turned four which is very unusual now days I'm always worrying.

I would also recommend Petplan. I've had a lot of claims with them probably 50+ and they have made a couple of mistakes where they took the excess off twice for the same condition and it was really stressful getting them to listen and do something about it (I spent a total of over 2 hours on the phone to get £100 back!). But apart from that they have ALWAYS paid out.

I have one policy with NCI but don't recommend them as they didn't pay out for a dental - their terms and conditions look identical to Petplan and Pp have paid out for identical claims.

I've only had one cliam with Helpucover but they were excellent and I would recommend them.

Thanks for the insite into what is the best type of policy. Where can I find one like this. I have looked at a few different ones and as pets mum has found I've only seen ones going up to £2000. I always like to cover all bases as you never know when an emaergency might come up.

My apologies Bunny Buddy and Lisa1981, I must've got mixed up between the cat/dog policy which you can chose a £4,000 option! I've never actually had a rabbit insured but £2,000 sounds reasonable for them, it is a shame they don't go higher though!

I recommend helpucover, I've had a couple of claims with them and they've been fine. Although they don't cover dentals unless you've had the rabbit for something like 2 or 3 years, but I don't know if many insurers do cover dentals.

Mine are with NCI.

As far as I'm aware they do cover dentals providing the vet confirms rabbits teeth have been checked regularly. Having said that I've had my policy a few years now so this may have changed for new clients.

I've had numerous claims for one mine and never had any problems with payment of the claim.

I have a dental/abscess claim in at the moment so will report back if any issues with payment.

I use pet plan for my bunny and I pay £13.08 a month and think the excess is £55 but covers me up to £2,000 worth of treatment.

Dental is exactly what I claimed for and they sent me a statement saying they don't cover dentals. It was spurs but he had his his teeth checked and okayed within the past six months. I know Petplan would have paid because they have several times and the T&C looked identical.

That's a worry.

I remember speaking in depth with someone before I took the plans out and asked specifically about dentals and 'unexplained' GI stasis.

Going to check my paperwork and hope they pay out for Nancy's treatment.

If they don't... You could complain and say you was misold the policy :)

The policy I have got says they cover dentistry but not rasping and burring of spurs so anything more complex and you should be alright if it reads the same as mine. My vet explained it that insurers pay out for all the other aspects such as consultation, GA , hospitalisation etc just not the actual burring which could be about £12 or so. .. but using my rabbit specialist vet Petplan and Pets at Home have always paid out for the whole lot even though they say they don't pay for burring/rasping, so that's what I expected of NCI but they didn't. They've paid out for GI stasis in the same rabbit. I'm currently claiming for Scally's stroke - if I remember I will report back how it went.

Thank you.

My policy booklet states dental work is covered providing a dental examination has been carried out in the 12 months before the problem arises. Poor Nancy's teeth couldn't be burred, she had to have two removed. Plus I've lost count of the times she's been to the vet this year and she gets her teeth checked each time - regardless of what we're there for.

I mentioned GI stasis as Will had had an episode with no obvious cause before I took the plans out. So it's a pre-existing condition😥However the treatment for GI Stasis would be covered if there was an obvious cause - hope that makes sense!

I would always recommend PetPlan as the safest policy.
There are so many bad pet insurers out there who quibble claims, that you really have to do your research.
With new companies offering rabbit insurance you also have to worry that they might pull out of the market and if you rabbit is 7 years old when they do that, you can't transfer your policy anywhere else.
So you really want to be with a company that has been around for a while and pays out most of the time. And the obvious answer is PetPlan.
There are probably other companies who meet this criteria, but I have no experience with them

= £157 per year. not critisising (sp?) your choice on provider, i'm guessing this is typical.
is it really worth it?

i was thinking i should get insured, but at that price i think i'd rather 'pay-as-i-go'.

I pay £24 at the moment for my two rabbits with Petplan.

I didn’t insure my first rabbit and luckily he was very healthy. Thank goodness I did with my current two though as Phillip has used up the entire £2000 available to claim this year. It doesn’t take much for costs to escalate and I couldn’t have afforded that much in such a little space of time without the insurance.
