  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Nausea vs pain

I used to medicate all presenting symptoms the same (throw everything at it- Metacam, tramadol, metaclop, Zantac, fluids- unless there were contraindications to this in anyway) with the aim of reducing the problem and preventing secondary problems.

I’ve had some poorly bunnies recently where I’ve always presumed them to be in pain however, it’s become clear that it was actually a nausea type response (seemed particularly common with my liver failure bunnies). It’s not something I’ve considered before, but when Lightning was pts he wouldn’t swallow his saliva and was just drooling and she said it was the nausea around the liver issues. Rabbits obviously can’t be sick but my understanding is that they can still feel nauseous- they just can’t do anything about it.

It just made me think and consider all the others over the years where I’ve assumed pain but I’m now wondering if it was pain or nausea. It makes me consider autumns episodes and what his predominant problem is in those. When Dawn was super poorly, the only thing that helped was metaclop (which is an anti-emetic in humans) and he was eventually pts was liver failure- the vet felt he was likely nauseous rather than in pain (although he did have pain when poked and prodded).

I won’t be changing how I Medicate and suchlike, however, it’s always important to me to understand as much as possible about what I’m seeing and what they are experiencing.

I’m wondering if anyone else has noticed or has any thoughts on this?

I don’t have any experience of this so I can’t advise but hopefully someone who has will see this and reply xx

It's certainly a possibility, especially with liver problems as these are known to cause nausea in humans. There are so many illnesses, which will produce nausea in humans and in my view it's certainly possible that the causes of this would be similar for rabbits.

I think that Tramadol/Vetergesic any other opiate when used alongside Metoclopramide can exacerbate the side effects of the opiates and lessen the beneficiary effects of Metoclopramide.

So in theory nausea associated with opiates may be exacerbated. Also, if a Rabbit has compromised Liver/Kidney function they may take longer to metabolise all drugs and there could be a build up of toxins. This would add to a generalised feeling of malaise.

Sorry these are human related articles, research papers in Rabbits are scarce and the only one's I have are copyrighted so I cant post them.
