Baby bunny emergency

beckie20

Mama Doe
I’ve just had a phone call from my sister to say one of her rabbits has had babies overnight (they thought they had two boys, so it’s been a surprise!)

She’s asked me to go over and help but I know nothing about what to do with baby bunnies!

Any advice would be much appreciated - she said there’s baby bunnies everywhere and she’s not sure the Mum is looking after them :-(

First make sure she separates the Buck from the Doe to try to prevent the Buck impregnating the Doe again. The Doe will be VERY fertile immediately after kindling.

Then refer to this thread which contains excellent advice

Good luck !! x

You must take the Buck out immediately. Mum should do everything else, if babies are out of the nest (did she make one) pop them back in. If the Buck has been in with Mum and he has mated again with her, there will be another litter due in around 31 days. Please ask any questions you have.

They were separated this morning, but not until they found the babies so I’ll let them know there could be more.

There were four cold babies out of the nest, three I’ve warmed back up in my hands and put them back when they started moving, but number four doesn’t seem to be coming to life :(

Some of them are making little squeaking noises, I assume that’s ok?

I’m not sure what a good nest looks like, this is just a pile of fur in the corner, seems to be enough to cover all the babies though.

Mum is a bit bloody down her back end - she’s white though, so not sure if it looks worse than it is.

Should I leave a heat pad near the nest?

I don’t have any experience but I’m sending lots of vibes and hugs, well done for helping them. Are they outdoor rabbits?

Thank you all - 8 baby bunnies in total, although one sadly didn’t make it.

Had to pop Mum to the vets in the end this afternoon as she had a tear and her bladder was bulging out - over the phone the vets thought it might just be the sac not fully out so said to keep an eye and take her down if no better by 3 which is why they didn’t take her down any earlier.

Hopefully she recovers quickly and is able to look after all those babies!

You're welcome!

I hope Mum heals up well and the babies thrive.
Sorry you lost one, always sad when that happens x
