Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

When do lop eared rabbits ears flop?

Young Bun
I'm getting a lop eared bunny in a few weeks time. It's only 6 weeks old at the moment, one ear has flopped properly, the other one is flopped over onto the same side. When should it flop the right way?

It varies. It depends on the proportion of the crown (the space between the ears on the top of the head). If the crown is equally wide from side to side and front to back then the ears should lop quite quickly. But the proportions of the crown may be thrown out of kilter during a growth spurt, so the ears may be all over the shop at times. Genetics also play a part, some Lops may always have wayward ears. But they dont all poke their tongue out at the paparazzi !

By 6 months of age you can usually have a good idea as to how lopped your Lop will be.

Haha. How cute. What breed is that bunny? Thank you. My other lop eared rabbit had properly lopped ears by 5 weeks so I wondered how long it took most rabbits.

She was a Velveteen Lop, not a Standardised Breed in the UK but it is in the USA.

I've just hand reared 3 baby bunnies, 1 was full lop by 4 weeks old, another was on and off lop from about then but stayed helicopter ears up until last week at 11 weeks old he's gone full lop! The other is uppy eared! By sister has two mini lops and they were both fully lopped by 8 weeks.
