Lump near spay wound? :(

Just giving panacur to Apricot and Penelope, checked their bellies as per.

Penelope has a movable squishy lump (I didn't really prod or move it) near her line of stitches, it sticks out and is visible - but is under the skin if that makes sense?

She seems okay in herself but I have to admit I'm so so scared... What could this be..? I'm gunna call vets first thing to get her to see William :'( any chance this is harmless...? Or is the reality bleak..? :'(

It is probably a reaction to the suturing material. If it is it should resolve over the next 2-3 weeks. But IMO I would want the Vet to actually examine Penelope to rule out anything else. Good luck x

Yea I'm calling the vets the second they open - thanks, I hope it's something like that as opposed to something more serious :( thanks for responding I really appreciate it x

Reactions to suturing material are not uncommon and they are almost always self resolving and painless :)

Oh gosh I really really hope it's that then :( thank you

Could the reaction occur after nearly two weeks though? I've been checking them both, twice daily and it really hasn't been there before x

Thanks, I'm just so worried :(

William isn't there til Thursday :( so I have an appointment with the other exotic specialist tomorrow morning.

She's eating and seems totally happy and fine in herself, so hopefully it's okay to wait til tomorrow morning...? I hope so x

Our foster dog had a similar reaction to her spay wound. It took a couple of weeks extra on 'rest' (very lively lurcher pup who considered anything under 20mph a waste of time) and it resolved itself completely. It started off with a couple of very small areas right next to the (externally healed) scar which I thought could be herniating - and it turned into 'sausages' on each side of the wound. She was examined every week and it was put down to a reaction to the sutures.

I've replied privately, and you know how to get me if I can help and support.
Sorry I have't been able to see messages on here and thanks so much for getting in touch.

My phone has been off for a few days ......

Yes I wondered about this, I kept both of them confined for almost 2 weeks but on Saturday I put them in the outside pen for about an hour, they were both running around lots, but seemed okay. I'm seeing the vet tomorrow morning so hopefully they'll be able to tell what it is :(

So I feel like it's not very clear in the picture, but it's very obvious in real life, also when she stands up it looks a lot larger :(

It probably is just a reaction to the sutures but William will be able to rule out any possibility of a minor hernia or anything else going on below the surface. I have only ever had one Doe who's spay herniated and that happened less than 36 hours after the op. I am sure he will be able to put your mind at ease x

Sadly William is not around til Thursday so I'm seeing a different vet tomorrow :( hopefully she'll know what it is - it feels kinda filled but light? But then there's something hard in it :( thanks x

Hope all goes well for Penelope's appointment this morning. I wont say 'dont worry' as I know it's impossible not to. But the lump is far more likely to be a reaction to sutures than to anything else.

Thanks for putting up the photo Grace.

As I said on the phone yesterday, the two possibles I could think of (without seeing a photo) are a reaction to suture material, or a minor hernia.

I know you can't see William, but are you seeing Avon today?

If you say it's "filled but light" then I am sure she will check if there's any residual infection or small cyst/abscess xx

Yes saw Avon this morning, she's a really good vet :)

She felt the lump, didn't think it was a hernia. Then stuck a needle into the lump and sucked a load of red watery liquid out of it.. Penelope wasn't best pleased about that...

Anyway, lumps gone now, she's back on loxicom, got another appointment Thursday with Avon to check again, if it comes back in the meantime she said to bring her back and they'll do a scan.

I said on Saturday was the first time they'd both run around properly after the op, and then Saturday night I'd put them back in their hutch with attached run - Avon thinks she stretched too much or something and basically it was a pocket of fluid... But not infected? Not 100% sure what caused it, but they're both back inside now so gunna keep a close eye on it and Avon said to limit their space again just maybe til the end of the week xx
