Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Liver ultrasound - usual vet or specialist

Morning everyone

Dusty is currently an inpatient with our usual vets after a nasty UTI and subsequent gi stais (inpatient since Monday) Her blood results this morning have shown raised liver enzyme ALT (616, higher end ofnormal range is 60) and our vet has suggested a liver ultrasound to examine for any potential issues. He did say that as a practice they don’t have a lot of experience doing liver ultrasounds in bunnies, but obviously do them in cats/dogs all the time. He has said that he is happy to attempt the ultrasound but that we could also take her to specialist (CJ hall) if we wanted so,done with more rabbit experience

Would it be better to have a rabbit specialist do this? this would however involve a trip in a car etc to a different place and maybe not for a few days, whereas she is still an inpatient with our current vet so they could do it onsite today.

Thank you in advance for your thoughts!

Can your vet do an ultrasound and discuss the results with the specialist? Maybe they could be contacted beforehand so your vet is working with them but bunny doesn't have to travel. Can the results be recorded or live streamed across (eg by skype / phone)?

Our vet does basic ultrasound exams themselves but has an ultrasound specialist who comes to them if needed (by appointment - so they have to be booked day or two in advance).

It’s about half an hour each way by car - so not exactly a terrible journey, however she is obviously still not quite 100% (although vet says fit to travel if needed) I wouldn’t want to put her through a stressful car journey if it was reasonable to have our local vets do it if you see what I mean

Yes I guess discussion with them by phone probably would be reasonable

Personally I would go to CJ Hall if Dusty could cope with the journey. Best wishes for whatever you decide to do x

I think I would go to the specialist if they say she can do the journey ok. Sending lots of vibes xx

Thank you for replies. My vets are going to call CJ hall to discuss her case and then we are going to decide later after that discussion

As you've already decided, I would concur that going to an exotic specialist such as CJ Hall is the best you can do :)
