this is starbuck and costa, they were from accidental litters both male. They are currently 7 weeks old. You were all so helpful with my other rabbits dexter and Bucky. They are in the house in a hutch at the moment, will be moving to the hutch and run outside when a bit bigger. I’ve never had rabbits this young, what age do you usually vaccinate and neuter young rabbits? There currently fed on Wagg bunny pellets and hay, what would you recommend to feed young rabbits? Many thanks Ali xx

Hello

I would not make any dietary changes at all at this stage. If the kits are just 7 weeks of age they should still be with their Mum really. The RWAF provide a vast amount of information about all aspects of Rabbit Care/Health etc so I would advise you to have a thorough read through their website :

https://rabbitwelfare.co.uk/

A bit more information about taking on baby Rabbits and diet

With regards to their vaccinations,

The Nobivac Myxomatosis-RHD Vaccine can be given from 5 weeks of age

http://www.noahcompendium.co.uk/?id=-455496

The Filavac Vaccine can be given from 10 weeks of age

https://www.harcourt-brown.co.uk/media/documents/filavac.doc

Some Vets may use Eravac instead of Filavac. Eravac can be given from the age of 30 days. As you will note from the data sheet duration of immunity has not been established with this vaccine

Good luck with your new additions :)

I did comment on there age, unfortunately they’d already sold the Mum the day before, I just wanted to give these two a decent home. I’ve no plans to change the food, from eating solids they apparently love lettuce, I’m not planning on giving them that -regardless! I’ll give the vets a call on Monday- thank you.

Hi

Rabbits as young as 7 weeks should be given a diet of hay and a small amount of pellets. The pellets for "junior" rabbits have a higher percentage of fat which helps to promote growth (I believe). You can start introducing fresh greens/forage at about 12 weeks. But yes you're right - lettuce is just like cardboard!! Better of giving them darker greens, like spinach, kale etc.

You can vaccinate from 8 weeks I believe.

Most vets won't like to neuter until at least 6 months but it can be earlier than 6 months, (about 4 months) depending on whether their balls have dropped or not!! So keep an eye out for them

Oh dear, well at least your two Kits are now in safe hands. Good luck at the Vets today x

Hi there - aren't they lovely?

There's some info on neutering rabbits here:

https://rabbitwelfare.co.uk/rabbit-health/neutering/

http://www.rabbitwelfare.co.uk/pdfs/neutering28807.pdf

Regards vaccinations, the novibac myxo can be given to them now so I would suggest you do that first. I would then when they are 10 weeks old give them the Filavac vaccination.

Some vets are giving Eravac, which can also be given now, but the duration of immunity of that vaccine is 9 months as opposed to the 12 months of Filavac

Info here:

https://rabbitwelfare.co.uk/category/vaccination/

I hope that helps :)

Just to add me lost Starbuck the gorgeous ginger one Saturday night, he was only around 15 weeks old, were devastated. X

Oh no  I’m so very sorry  thinking of you and sending hugs xx

Sorry to ask, but we’re they vaccinated? I would suggest a vet check on Costa and get him vaccinated against Vhd1/ VHD2 (Filavac) if he’s not been done already, then the other vaccine for myxomatosis 2 weeks later, which also covers VHD1. If you haven’t had a PM done and don’t know why he died, it’s advisable to have him cremated rather than buried. Sorry if this appears insensitive xx

How dreadful I am very sorry

I also concur with Zoobec x

Thanks everyone, yes they were both vaccinated against myxi and vhd2, the vet said despite been vaccinated his eyes were showing signs of myxi and they were both house rabbits as well, never been outside. Costa isn’t showing any signs of it as yet, he’s been kept an eye on. The past 2 weeks, the cats needed a dental, other cat has crystals in his urine ( been treated) now we’ve lost him. After this as much as I love my animals, I’m not having anymore it’s too upsetting xx
