Temporary Shortage in Supply of Filivac (RHD2 Vaccine)

Jack's-Jane

Wise Old Thumper
There appears to be another temporary problem in the supply of Filivac. My Vet Surgery was aware that this was a possibility and so placed a large order. But Vet Surgeries who do not see so many Rabbits may find they are having problems obtaining Filivac. Eravac, the other licensed vaccine, is available but it is not yet known if it can be ordered in single doses. It may still only be available in 10 dose vials.

Just thought I'd flag this up in case any of you have Rabbits who are due to have their RHD2 Vaccination soon.

There is a very informative FB Group about RHD2 where this recent issue is being discussed.

I guess a lot of re-vaccinations will be due any time now too as it was 2 years ago that supplies started to be available in the UK, so there is likely to be a real peak in demand. Mine were done on 30 June.

I was told about this earlier today by my vet :)

Lots of folk aren't on Facebook, so I'll flag it up on the RHD2 thread with details :thumb:

We've been out of stock at work for about a week now, and have a list building up of people that need that vaccine. My Jake is included that! So far we can't get eravac in single doses

Thanks for this info Jane.

I've just rang my vets in a panic and was relieved to find they have the vaccine in.

Now in a state as I was told their boosters are due tomorrow. I'm sure it's the 14th that's what's on my calendar and I always get a reminder.

I know the protection won't run out over night but I'm at hospital with mother-in-law and OH.

Just more to worry about.

From what I've heard, filavac should only be out for a few weeks, but I've heard that before with vaccine stock so I won't hold my breath until it's actually back in stock!!

The Eravac drugs rep says that single dose vials are due to the UK wholesalers mid-July, so they are fairly imminent. At least in future there will be two different products from different companies available, so even if we have a first preference, we should at least be able to continue cover. Eravac also has a longer shelf life so some vets with fewer customers may find it preferable.

Yes and that is the most important thing, especially as reported confirmed cases of RHD2 are on the rise again. It would appear that all the Urban Wildies from the local Stables here have been wiped out again

It's probably only really an issue for rabbits that haven't had the vaccine yet, rather than ones that are due for their booster.

Not entirely the case, although there will be some residual immunity from previous vaccination it is essential that Booster Vaccines are given.

Bum, mine are due August. Happy for them to be a bit late but would rather get it done on time. Hope it all sorts itself out by then!

Yeah but a couple weeks or so is very unlikely to make any difference. It's not essential in that it's not a magic spell that dissolves after midnight on the 365th day.

It's handy to have this posted so people can go asap if they were planning on getting the vaccine soon anyway, or so that they can call ahead and make sure it's in stock before dragging their rabbits to the vet.

But really I think if there's a brief shortage and if VHD is becoming more prevalent than surely it ought to be saved for rabbits who've never been vaccinated as they won't be immune, and so they're the only ones really at risk here. It makes sense for vets to prioritize it for the ones who need it most.

Anyway, seems an unnecessary thing to worry about to me unless if you think they might be out for ages, or if there's a fair amount of evidence of rabbits dying of VHD when they haven't had a booster in the exact window of 1 year. I get that there's that uncertainty around it. It's just the general population either doesn't worry enough or worries too much about vaccines...doesn't seem to be any middle ground (except for keletkezes? lol) :/

They definitely are, I’m getting maybe 2-3 reports daily of confirmed and suspected cases, and the suspected ones are mostly multiple deaths (over 100 in a couple of cases) so highly likely :-(

Red bolded font- they were out of stock for several weeks last time

Green bolded font- There is A LOT of evidence of Rabbits dying from both strains of RHD

Jeez................

You need a medal for all the effort you have put in to running the FB page. I know for a fact that there are several Vets who follow your page, a few hove posted I think. It has become a very well respected source of accurate and up to date information. It's good to have the RWAF on board too xx

Yeah I meant a lot of evidence of rabbits dying even though they were vaccinated one year before.

I'm not saying there's nothing to worry about for un-vaccinated rabbits. The opposite actually. That's why I was thinking it'd probably be best if un-vaccinated rabbits were first choice for the vaccine.

I know they were out of stock for awhile last time, that's why 'unless..'

I get entirely where you're coming from William. The vaccine is indeed not a magic spell, and the Novibac/Myxo was tested beyond 12 months efficacy.

There's a supply of Eravac so all is not lost for people wanting to vaccinate. The worst that can happen is that people have to pay a higher price for Eravac if a vet has to open a multi-dose vial for just one or several rabbits, but this is only what was happening last year anyway. And a higher price in money is better than paying a high price in rabbit health :)

Thankfully mine are being done this afternoon.

Elm House Vets in Chelmsford have stock - Santa don't know if you can put that on the Facebook group - thanks.
